The U.S. flag is flying at half-staff across the country today following President Donald Trump’s order in honor of the victims of this week’s tragic school shooting in Minneapolis.
What happened in Minneapolis?
On Wednesday, 23-year-old Robin Westman opened fire inside Annunciation Catholic School, a church-affiliated institution in Minneapolis. According to police, Westman fired 116 rounds from a rifle, killing two children—an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old—and injuring at least 17 others, including 14 children and three adults.
Authorities confirmed that Westman had once attended the same school and was previously a member of the church. FBI Director Kash Patel later classified the attack as domestic terrorism motivated by hate ideology targeting Catholics.
President Trump’s proclamation
In response to the shooting, President Trump issued a proclamation ordering flags at half-staff nationwide until sunset on August 31, 2025. The directive applies to:
- The White House and all federal buildings
- Military posts and naval stations
- U.S. embassies, consulates, and government facilities abroad
In his statement, Trump said the decision was made “as a mark of respect for the Minneapolis school shooting victims.” He added: “I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff … throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, August 31, 2025.”
National and local response
The attack has sparked renewed debate on gun violence and domestic extremism. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced the deployment of additional law enforcement officers to schools and churches in Minneapolis, stating, “No child should go to school worried about losing a classmate or gunshots erupting during prayer.”
President Trump also offered condolences, saying he was “praying for everyone involved.”
