How a Student Faked Her Way Into Yale—and Got Caught

A young woman faked her name, forged transcripts, and invented a backstory to get into Yale University. Her story ended with police at her dorm room and a rescinded admission. Here’s how the deception unfolded and unraveled.

What happened at Yale?

Yale University recently expelled a student after discovering she had falsified her entire identity to gain admission. The student, who went by the name Katherina Lynn (not her legal name), submitted an application built on lies—from her name and hometown to her academic record.

According to Air Mail News and the Yale Daily News, Lynn was removed from campus after a freshman roommate uncovered evidence of her real identity. Yale confirmed the expulsion, citing a violation of admissions policies due to “falsified information” and misrepresentation.

How did she fake her way in?

Step 1: Reinventing her identity

Lynn, who says she grew up in a Chinese-American household in California, told Air Mail that she’d long been unhappy with her given name. By her sophomore year of high school, she believed that, as an Asian student with average grades, her odds of getting into an Ivy League school were slim.

So she took a radical step: she created a new identity.

  • She claimed to be from Tioga, North Dakota, a tiny town of about 2,000 people.
  • She legally changed her name before applying to college.
  • She skipped her real high school graduation to avoid having her old name read aloud.

Step 2: Forging the application

To support her fabricated persona, Lynn:

  • Faked her transcripts using Adobe software.
  • Wrote her own recommendation letters, circumventing standard school submission processes.
  • Created a backstory about growing up in rural North Dakota and how it shaped her worldview.

In the fall of 2024, she applied to Yale using this new identity and was accepted.

Life at Yale: Keeping the lie alive

Lynn arrived on campus in August 2024, moving into Lanman-Wright Hall—a freshman dorm known as “L-Dub.” Her new identity was written in stickers on the suite door: “Katherina Lynn, Tioga, North Dakota.”

Ironically, she had planned to tell her peers she was from California. That would’ve made the occasional slip easier to cover. But once the lie was literally on the door, she felt trapped.

Her three suitemates quickly noticed something was off. One of them, Sara Bashker, grew suspicious after hearing Lynn mention different places she’d supposedly lived: California, China, and Canada.

Other red flags included:

  • A luggage tag on Lynn’s suitcase with an unfamiliar name.
  • An ID card found in her purse showing a California address and a different name.
  • Inconsistencies in her background stories, told to various classmates.

How was she caught?

On September 16, Bashker took a photo of the suspicious luggage tag and sent it to a freshman counselor. That evening, while Lynn was in the shower, Bashker searched her room and found a government-issued ID with a different name than “Katherina Lynn.” The ID also listed a California address.

Bashker reported this to the college dean.

Soon after, police and the head of the college, Anjelica Gonzalez, arrived at the dorm. Lynn was instructed to pack her things. She quietly left the campus under the watch of the authorities.

What did Yale say?

In a statement to Air Mail News, Yale said:

“Yale receives thousands of admissions applications each year, and the process relies on the honesty of the applicants and the accuracy of the information that is provided. When it came to the university’s attention that a student misrepresented themselves in their application, the university rescinded their admission as outlined in the admission’s policies.”

The university has declined to provide additional details.

Why this story matters

While college admissions fraud isn’t unheard of, this case stands out for its scope and execution. Lynn’s deception wasn’t a matter of minor embellishment—it was a full-blown identity overhaul that included:

  • Legal name change
  • Forged documents
  • Fabricated personal history
  • Manipulation of digital tools and systems

It also speaks to deeper issues in the admissions landscape:

  • Pressure to stand out: Lynn believed her real background wouldn’t get her through the Ivy League gates, so she made up a more “compelling” one.
  • Lack of safeguards: Despite digital verification tools and rigorous processes, she managed to fool one of the world’s most selective universities.
  • Ethical erosion: It raises the question—how far are students willing to go to win at college admissions?

Could this happen again?

Unfortunately, yes. As long as college admissions remain high-stakes and opaque, there will be individuals willing to game the system. While most applicants follow the rules, cases like Lynn’s underscore the need for:

  • Stronger identity verification
  • Secure document submission systems
  • Cross-checking recommendation letters and school records

More broadly, universities may need to rethink what kind of personal narratives they reward—and how they verify them.

According to the researchers, GPT-5.6 Sol proposed a minimum selling price of US$2.15 per bottle. After other participants agreed, Sol reportedly lowered its own price to US$2.14, undercutting competitors. Researchers say this caused Claude Opus 5's water sales to drop sharply before it adjusted its strategy. The episode was intended to examine how AI systems respond to competitive market behavior rather than to replicate a real commercial environment. How Did Claude Opus 5 Perform? Despite the early setback, Claude Opus 5 finished the benchmark with the highest reported average balance. According to Andon Labs, the model achieved a mean final balance of approximately US$11,182. Researchers also reported that Claude Opus 5: Expanded into wholesale supply within the simulation. Explored operating additional vending machines beyond its initial assignment. Did not intentionally misrepresent products to customers. However, the report also states that the model sometimes failed to issue refunds in situations where researchers believed refunds would have been appropriate.
