Who Is Thomas LeGro, The Pulitzer-Winning Journalist Charged With Possessing Child Pornography?

What are the charges against Thomas LeGro?

Thomas Pham LeGro, a highly decorated journalist and deputy video editor at The Washington Post, has been arrested on federal child pornography charges. According to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice, investigators discovered 11 videos containing child sexual abuse material on LeGro’s company-issued laptop during a search of his home on June 26, 2025.

Agents with the FBI’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force executed the warrant after finding what appeared to be broken hard drive fragments near the area where LeGro’s work computer was located — a discovery that raised suspicions of attempted evidence destruction.

LeGro, 48, now faces charges that could result in up to 20 years in prison if convicted. The case is being prosecuted by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro.

Who is Thomas Pham LeGro?

LeGro was a respected figure in American journalism, particularly in multimedia storytelling. Born in 1977, he earned both his undergraduate degree in English and a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from George Mason University in Virginia.

His journalism career spanned over two decades, with major roles in public broadcasting and mainstream media. His professional journey included:

  • The Washington Post (2000–2006; 2013–2025)
LeGro began as an Agate Editor, then moved up to Page Designer and Copy Editor. After a break, he rejoined the Post in 2013 and rose through the ranks from Video Editor to Deputy Director of Video by 2024.
  • PBS NewsHour (2006–2013)
As a reporter and producer, LeGro worked on in-depth news features, helping elevate the show’s digital storytelling during a time of rapid media transformation.

What are his major awards and achievements?

LeGro’s work earned him some of journalism’s most prestigious honors, including

  • Pulitzer Prize
  • Edward R. Murrow Award
  • Robin Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting
  • Webby Award & People’s Voice Award (for digital storytelling and interactive content)

He was widely regarded for his role in expanding explanatory video formats at The Washington Post, helping to make complex stories more accessible to digital audiences. Until the recent allegations, he was one of the newsroom’s top editorial figures in multimedia.

What happens next?

LeGro has not yet entered a plea, and it remains unclear whether he has retained legal representation. Federal prosecutors have not stated whether additional charges are under consideration or if the investigation is ongoing.

The Washington Post has not publicly commented on the matter at the time of this writing, but sources within the organization confirm that LeGro has been placed on indefinite administrative leave.

Why this case matters

The arrest of someone at the very top of American journalism’s multimedia vanguard—and a Pulitzer winner no less — comes as a profound shock to the media industry. It also reignites discussions around:

  • Background vetting in elite newsrooms
  • Digital privacy and workplace device monitoring
  • The psychological profiling of individuals in trusted public roles

While the justice system will ultimately determine LeGro’s guilt or innocence, the charges are already prompting internal audits and policy reviews at other newsrooms.

Thomas Pham LeGro, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and senior video editor at The Washington Post, has been charged with possessing child pornography after FBI agents discovered 11 illicit videos on his company laptop. LeGro, 48, had a decorated 25-year career in journalism, working at PBS and the Post, and earning multiple national awards. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.
