Terrifying conveyor belt ride leaves mother shaken, highlights airport safety lapses
A 2-year-old boy from Staten Island was swept away on a baggage conveyor belt at Newark Liberty International Airport last week in a heart-stopping moment that further underscores the escalating safety and infrastructure issues plaguing the busy travel hub.
The incident occurred Wednesday morning in Terminal A as the toddler’s mother was rebooking a JetBlue flight. According to a report by PIX 11, the boy climbed onto the low-height baggage belt unattended and was whisked away before his mother could react.
Witnesses said the child was carried down a chute into the terminal’s lower-level luggage screening area, sparking immediate panic.
Port Authority officers leap into action
Two Port Authority police officers nearby quickly sprang into action. Frank Conti, President of the Port Authority Police PBA, described the rapid response that may have saved the child from serious harm.
“The two cops were able to move fast into the system, which was vital,” Conti told PIX 11. “There was a split in the belts. One officer went toward one direction, one toward the other direction.”
One of the officers ultimately found the toddler near an X-ray machine—just moments before he could enter it—and scooped him up unharmed. He was safely reunited with his family, who later flew to Tampa, Florida, for their vacation.
A happy ending amid mounting airport chaos
While the toddler’s dramatic rescue had a fortunate outcome, it adds to a growing list of troubling episodes at Newark Liberty International Airport—a transit hub increasingly under fire for delays, safety lapses, and operational meltdowns.
The airport has been described by critics as a “delay-plagued hellhole,” citing extreme backups on the tarmac, construction chaos, a wave of cancellations, and even dangerous equipment failures.
Blackouts, measles scare, and controller trauma
Just weeks earlier, on April 28, the airport suffered a 90-second radar and communications blackout that left air traffic controllers helpless and caused cascading delays across the Northeast. At least five controllers took 45-day trauma leaves due to the psychological toll of the incident. A similar blackout occurred last November.
Adding to the alarm, New Jersey health authorities recently warned of a possible measles exposure after an infected traveler passed through Terminal B, raising fears of an outbreak in one of the country’s busiest airports.
Experts: Cut flights, increase aircraft size
As frustrations mount, aviation safety experts say the solution may not be a quick fix.
“They simply need to permanently reduce daily flights into the airport, permanently combined with using bigger planes,” said Kyle Bailey, a former Federal Aviation Administration Safety Team member. “I don’t see a near-term, immediate everything gets better [solution].”
Even proposed solutions, such as reducing flight volume, come with trade-offs—fewer options for travelers and potential disruptions to airline schedules.
