American adult film star Whitney Wright, known for her large social media following, recently traveled to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. The visit comes as the militant group continues to enforce restrictions on women’s rights since seizing power in 2021.
Wright, who boasts over a million followers on Instagram, has recently embarked on trips to various Muslim-majority nations. Last year, she drew widespread attention for her visit to Iran, a country known for its stringent policies on women’s freedoms since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
Social media posts and Taliban response
The 28-year-old shared images from her Afghanistan trip, including a national carrier Ariana plane on a runway, a tiled ceiling from the western city of Herat, supermarket shelves, and local vehicles, according to reports from the Associated Press. However, she did not appear in any of the images herself. Wright has not responded to media inquiries about the visit, and no official statement has been made by the Taliban.
Taliban’s stance and Afghanistan’s tourism push
The Taliban, which has been seeking international recognition, is attempting to promote tourism, highlighting Afghanistan’s reduced violence levels. Despite this, the group has continued to impose severe restrictions on women’s education and employment, confining many to their homes.
The US State Department has repeatedly warned American citizens against traveling to Afghanistan, citing risks such as civil unrest, crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and inadequate healthcare facilities.

Born in Oklahoma City, Whitney Wright requires a visa to enter Afghanistan, but with no operational Afghan embassies or consulates in the US, the specifics of her entry remain unclear. The Taliban currently controls around 40 diplomatic missions worldwide.
Wright, a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause, also made headlines last year for her visit to Iran. During her stay, she visited the former US Embassy in Tehran, which was abandoned following the 1979 hostage crisis. She posted images posing beside a torn US flag on the ground, sparking backlash from Iranian exiles.
Iranian authorities insisted that her visit was conducted through official channels and that she was issued a visa like any other foreign traveler. However, her adherence to Iran’s strict Islamic dress code for women further fueled controversy.
