US citizens will now need to obtain visa and show proof of funds to visit Brazil

US citizens will need to obtain a visa and show proof of funds to visit Brazil

Stricter travel authorization programs are currently on hold (again). Both the European Union’s ETIAS program and Brazil’s new visa system for travelers from the United States, Canada, and Australia have been delayed.

However, these delays simply indicate that the program has been postponed. While the visa regulations will be relaxed in 2024, modifications will be made for tourists from those three nations visiting Brazil in 2025.

What are the new visa requirements for Brazil in 2025?

Beginning April 10, 2025, US, Canadian, and Australian citizens will require a visa to enter Brazil. The good news is that passengers can apply for a quick electronic visa (e-visa) online rather than visiting a consulate.

The e-visa will cost $80.90 and be valid for ten years with numerous entries, with stays limited to 90 days each year.

The visa was previously scheduled to be reintroduced in early 2024. Until 2019, US travelers to Brazil were required to obtain visas. Evisas were introduced in 2018 before the system was completely discontinued.

Documents required to apply for a Brazilian visa

Letter of Intent: This document should include your travel dates, the purpose of the trip, and confirmed hotel information.

Proof of Residence: Documentation that confirms your residency in the United States.

Travel documents: Round-trip flights to Brazil (or a signed return declaration if not available).

Proof of income: The latest three months’ bank statements or the last six payslips, with an average monthly amount of at least $2,000. Those who do not meet this condition may obtain a sponsor to vouch for their finances.

These requirements may appear daunting, but visa systems are frequently built on reciprocity. When going to the United States, Brazilians face comparable, if not more stringent, requirements.

Currently, most Brazilian residents must schedule an in-person visa appointment and demonstrate the financial resources to cover their entire trip. A US visa costs $185, even for individuals who are only passing through the country.

A Brazilian visa is likely to take five business days on average to process

A Brazilian visa is likely to take five business days on average to process. However, the business that handles applications recommends that you apply at least two months before your trip.

Despite the anticipated changes, Brazil remains a popular tourism destination. In 2023, the country received about six million tourists, with US citizens coming in second only to Argentinians in the first nine months.
