Viral videos capture shocking moment vessel’s masts collide with iconic New York landmar

A catastrophic collision between a Mexican Navy training vessel and New York’s iconic Brooklyn Bridge has left two people dead and 19 others injured in what witnesses described as a shocking maritime accident that unfolded Saturday afternoon in the East River.

The dramatic incident, captured in multiple videos that have since gone viral across social media platforms, shows the tall ship’s three masts slamming into the underside of the bridge structure before partially collapsing as horrified onlookers watched from shore and nearby vessels.

Dramatic rescue operation

Eyewitness accounts describe the harrowing moments as crew members clung desperately to the damaged rigging following the collision.

“We saw someone dangling, and I couldn’t tell if it was just blurry or my eyes, and we were able to zoom in on our phone and there was someone dangling from the harness from the top for like at least like 15 minutes before they were able to rescue them,” a witness told The Associated Press.

New York Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the grim toll during an emergency press conference, stating that while 19 people sustained injuries, four of them serious, all casualties occurred aboard the vessel rather than on the bridge itself. Emergency response teams from multiple agencies coordinated a complex rescue operation to retrieve injured crew members from the damaged rigging and deck areas.

Historic vessel on international journey

The Mexican Navy identified the vessel as the Cuauhtemoc, a 297-foot-long, 40-foot-wide academy training ship that serves as a floating classroom for naval cadets. The ship had departed from the Mexican port of Acapulco on April 6 with 277 people onboard and was in the midst of an ambitious training voyage scheduled to visit 22 ports across 15 nations.

“The Secretary of the Navy renews its commitment to the safety of personnel, transparency in its operations and excellent training for future officers of the Mexican Armada,” the Mexican Navy stated in a Spanish-language release addressing the incident.

According to maritime authorities, the Cuauhtemoc is a traditional sailing vessel that embarks annually at the conclusion of naval academy classes to complete cadets’ practical training. This year’s voyage had an ambitious itinerary that included Kingston, Jamaica; Havana, Cuba; Cozumel, Mexico; Reykjavik, Iceland; multiple ports in France including Bordeaux, Saint Malo, and Dunkirk; as well as Aberdeen, Scotland. The planned journey would have spanned 254 days total, with 170 days at sea.

Investigation underway

The U.S. Coast Guard, National Transportation Safety Board, and New York City authorities have launched a joint investigation into how the vessel, which requires precise navigation due to its substantial mast height, came to collide with the bridge.

Preliminary reports suggest possible navigational errors or miscalculations regarding tide levels and bridge clearance, though officials caution that a comprehensive determination of cause will require extensive analysis.

“We’re examining all factors, including nautical charts, communication logs, and the ship’s navigational systems,” said Coast Guard Commander Sarah Michaels. “We’re also investigating whether proper protocols were followed regarding passage beneath the bridge structure.”

Bridge structure assessment

The Brooklyn Bridge, one of New York City’s most recognizable landmarks and a vital transportation artery connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn, underwent immediate structural inspection following the collision.

City engineers have conducted preliminary assessments indicating that while the bridge sustained surface damage at the impact points, its structural integrity appears intact. The bridge was temporarily closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic but reopened late Saturday evening after safety clearance.

“Our initial evaluation shows the bridge’s primary structural elements were not compromised,” said New York Department of Transportation Commissioner James Rodriguez. “We’ll continue comprehensive testing in the coming days, but we’re confident the bridge remains safe for public use.”

Diplomatic response

The incident has prompted diplomatic exchanges between Mexican and U.S. officials. The Mexican Embassy in Washington issued a statement expressing condolences to the families of the deceased crew members and pledging full cooperation with American authorities in the investigation.

U.S. Secretary of State has reportedly spoken directly with Mexico’s Foreign Minister to coordinate response efforts and ensure proper support for the vessel’s crew members, many of whom remain in New York area hospitals receiving treatment.

This story is developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.
