Democratic members of the US House Oversight Committee have released 68 previously unseen photographs linked to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, revealing material lawmakers describe as disturbing, graphic, and largely unexplained.
The release came on Thursday, December 18, just one day before a Trump administration deadline requiring the disclosure of a much larger cache of Epstein-related records. According to committee officials, the images form part of a trove of nearly 95,000 photographs handed over by the Epstein estate last week. Lawmakers say the review is ongoing, and additional material could still be made public.
Release ahead of deadline raises stakes
Committee Democrats said the timing of the release was deliberate. With the administration facing a looming deadline to make Epstein-related files public, lawmakers argued that withholding material already in congressional possession would undermine transparency.
“This is about ensuring the public understands the scope of what exists,” one committee aide said, adding that the images were released despite limited accompanying information.
Photos released with almost no context
One of the most striking aspects of the newly released images is the absence of basic context. The Epstein estate provided no dates, locations, or explanations for any of the photographs.
Several images appear mundane at first glance. Epstein is shown sitting in what looks like a conference room, with a chalkboard behind him covered in mathematical equations. There is no indication of who else may have been present, what the meeting involved, or when the photograph was taken.
Democrats said the decision to release the photos without additional details was made “in an effort to continue providing full transparency,” even as questions continue to outnumber answers.
Disturbing references to Lolita
The most unsettling images show lines from Lolita written directly on a girl’s body. The text appears across different body parts, including the chest, foot, hip, neck, and spine, recreating a well-known passage from the novel.
Written by Vladimir Nabokov, Lolita tells the story of a 36-year-old man’s sexual obsession with a 12-year-old girl. The book has been banned in several European countries, including France and England.
Investigators and victims’ advocates have long pointed to Epstein’s fixation on the novel as a troubling detail. Epstein was known to keep a first-edition copy of Lolita in his New York home, a fact that has resurfaced repeatedly in court filings and investigative reports.
The photos include most of the selected passage but notably omit the final line. No explanation is offered, and the identity of the girl shown in the images is not disclosed.
Familiar faces reappear in images
Some of the newly released photographs again show high-profile public figures with Epstein. Images include Bill Gates and Noam Chomsky, pictured with Epstein and young girls whose faces have been redacted to protect their identities.
Lawmakers stressed that the images do not implicate Gates or Chomsky in any criminal activity. Both men have previously acknowledged meeting Epstein.
Gates has called his association with Epstein “a huge mistake,” saying their interactions centered on discussions related to philanthropy. Chomsky has said Epstein had already served his sentence at the time of their meetings, adding that under US legal norms, this constituted a “clean slate.”
Text messages hint at recruitment
One image shows what appears to be a screenshot of text messages referencing an 18-year-old from Russia. Another line in the exchange mentions “$1,000 per girl,” language that has intensified concerns about trafficking and recruitment.
The committee did not release further details about who sent or received the messages or when they were exchanged.
Passports from multiple countries
The photo release also includes images of passports and identification documents from countries including Ukraine, Russia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, South Africa, and Italy. Most names and personal details have been heavily redacted.
Committee Democrats said the documents belonged to “women whom Jeffrey Epstein and his conspirators were engaging,” though no additional explanation was provided.
Weapons and medication add to the mystery
Another set of images shows camouflage compound bows and a pill bottle for phenazopyridine, a medication used to treat urinary pain. While identifying details are largely blacked out, the address visible on the label is in Manhattan, close to Epstein’s townhouse.
As with much of the release, the relevance of these images remains unclear.
Lawmakers demand full disclosure
Representative Robert Garcia, a Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said the photographs underscore the need for full transparency from federal authorities.
“These images raise more questions about what exactly the Department of Justice has in its possession,” Garcia said. “We must end this White House cover-up, and the DOJ must release the Epstein files now.”
The US Department of Justice has not publicly commented on the latest release. As pressure mounts ahead of the disclosure deadline, lawmakers and victims’ advocates say understanding the full scope of Epstein’s activities and associates is long overdue.
