President directs federal government to expand notorious island facility for “violent offenders”

President Donald Trump has directed the federal government to “reopen and expand” Alcatraz, the infamous island prison in San Francisco Bay, as part of his administration’s intensified efforts against crime allegedly committed by undocumented immigrants.

The directive comes amid a series of controversial immigration enforcement actions that have defined the early months of Trump’s second term in office.

60 years later, Trump orders reopening of Alcatraz prison

Trump cites need for tougher approach to violent crime

Announcing his decision on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat criminal offenders, the dregs of society, who will never contribute anything other than misery and suffering.”

The president suggested previous administrations lacked sufficient resolve in addressing violent crime. “When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals and keep them far away from anyone they could harm. That’s the way it’s supposed to be,” Trump added.

According to the president, the revitalized facility will be used “to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders,” and his decision “will serve as a symbol of law, order, and justice.”

The historic prison operated for less than three decades

Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary operated for only 29 years before closing in 1963. According to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, the closure was primarily due to prohibitively high operating costs, deteriorating infrastructure, and the logistical challenges of supplying the island facility by boat.

Located approximately 1.25 miles offshore from San Francisco with a maximum capacity of 336 prisoners, Alcatraz now functions as a major tourist destination. The facility is currently managed by the National Parks Service and holds National Historic Landmark status.

During its operational years, Alcatraz housed numerous notorious criminals, including Prohibition-era crime boss Al Capone. The prison gained further notoriety for its numerous escape attempts. FBI records indicate that 36 individuals attempted 14 separate escapes, all of which resulted in capture or presumed death.

The 1979 film “Escape from Alcatraz,” starring Clint Eastwood, dramatized perhaps the most famous escape attempt by inmates John and Clarence Anglin along with Frank Morris.

Democrats question feasibility of proposal

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who represents San Francisco in Congress, dismissed the president’s announcement.

“Alcatraz closed as a federal penitentiary more than sixty years ago. It is now a very popular national park and major tourist attraction. The President’s proposal is not a serious one,” she wrote on X.

Pattern of aggressive immigration enforcement

The Alcatraz directive follows several other controversial measures implemented by the Trump administration targeting immigration enforcement. The president previously invoked wartime powers to deport Venezuelan gang members and is engaged in legal battles to send accused gang members to a high-security prison in El Salvador.

Trump has also ordered the establishment of a detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, reportedly designed to hold up to 30,000 individuals he has characterized as “the worst criminal aliens.”
