In an internal email obtained by CNN, Musk instructed all staff to submit a one-page summary detailing what they have accomplished in the past four weeks and what they plan to do in the next four weeks. The deadline: noon Thursday.
“This is due by noon on Thursday,” Musk wrote, emphasizing that regular progress tracking is now a key requirement inside xAI.
This marks the second time in recent months that Musk has asked employees to justify their work in writing. The move underscores his management style—demanding direct accountability, sometimes in unconventional ways.
Why now?
The request comes as xAI undergoes a major restructuring. The company recently shifted its strategy toward specialized AI tutors in domains like STEM, finance, medicine, and safety. As part of this pivot, Reuters reported that xAI laid off more than 500 data annotators from its generalist tutor team last week.
In an X (formerly Twitter) post, the company confirmed it would reduce generalist roles but expand specialist positions dramatically:
“Specialist AI tutors at xAI are adding huge value. We will immediately surge our Specialist AI tutor team by 10x!” the company posted on September 13.
Musk’s track record of tough demands
This isn’t the first time Musk has pressed staff for unusual self-reporting:
- 2022, Twitter takeover: Musk asked engineers to print out lines of code they had recently written—before later instructing them to shred the printouts.
