Verizon Media owns the website. It guaranteed its users that their Yahoo accounts, e-mail, and search experiences will have no effects in any way.
“As of August 26th, 2021, Yahoo India will no longer be publishing content,” a statement on the Yahoo India homepage read. “Your Yahoo Account, Mail, and Search experiences will not be affected in any way and will operate as usual. We thank you for your support and readership.”
According to the Yahoo website’s frequently asked questions (FAQ) section, the corporation has chosen to stop publishing all material in India. Thus closing down Yahoo’s content activities in the nation. Yahoo News, Yahoo Cricket, Yahoo Finance, Entertainment, and MAKERS India are among the content offerings that are not accessible henceforth.
“We did not come to this decision lightly,” Yahoo said. Also, the recent changes to the country’s regulatory laws impacted the company’s operations in India “that now limit the foreign ownership of media companies that operate and publish digital content in India.”
Due to changes in rules limiting foreign sponsorship of more than 26% in digital news media outlets, Verizon Media decided to shut down Yahoo India’s activities. According to the new IT laws, Yahoo India would likewise have to restructure its whole media operation. It needs to be within a certain timeline to operate the country’s news and current affairs industry.
Thanking all of its Indian users for their “support and trust” over the years; Yahoo also stated that the change will not affect Yahoo Mail or Yahoo Search; which will “continue to serve users in India as before, without any change.”
