Bijou Phillips Cuts Ties with Estranged Husband Danny Masterson, Requests Daughter’s Name Change

Bijou Phillips is taking a definitive step in moving forward from her estranged husband, Danny Masterson. The actress and model has filed court documents to remove the “Masterson” surname from their 11-year-old daughter’s name, signaling a complete emotional and symbolic separation from her convicted ex.

What the Legal Filing Reveals

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Bijou submitted the official request on October 24, 2025, seeking to rename her daughter from Fianna Francis Masterson to Fianna Francis Phillips.

A source close to Phillips described the filing as a “decisive and healing move,” one prompted not only by emotional distance but by a mother’s instinct to protect her child’s future identity. The petition is currently awaiting approval from a California judge.

The filing also comes nearly two years after Phillips divorced Masterson following his 30-year-to-life sentence for two counts of forcible rape involving incidents from 2003. People Magazine reported the couple was declared legally single the same day the petition was filed, closing a long chapter of legal and emotional limbo between them.

From Devotion to Divorce: A Timeline of Their Split

Bijou Phillips, now 45, married Masterson in October 2011 after several years of dating. They welcomed their daughter, Fianna, in 2014, and Phillips often described Masterson as an “amazing father,” even standing by him during his criminal trials.

Throughout the 2023 retrial, she was photographed hand-in-hand with him outside the courthouse. She also penned a letter to the judge ahead of sentencing, pleading for leniency and emphasizing his role as a caring parent.

However, after the sentencing in September 2023, Phillips filed for divorce within days, citing “irreconcilable differences.” At the time, insiders told the Daily Mail she was torn between loyalty to her husband and the need to shield her daughter from the fallout.

Friends reportedly encouraged her to “set an example for Fianna,” reminding her that accountability, even for someone you love, must come first. By 2025, the former couple had finalized all proceedings, including child custody, with Bijou having primary physical custody.

Why This Move Matters

On the surface, the change seems symbolic. But emotionally, it’s a profound break, one that psychologists often recognize as a crucial step in reclaiming autonomy.

In high-profile legal cases involving family trauma, children’s names often carry heavy emotional connotations. Changing a surname, according to the American Psychological Association, can help “reaffirm identity, rebuild emotional safety, and reduce associations with trauma.”

Phillips appears to be doing exactly that. Those close to her describe the legal filing as “protective, not punitive.” It’s about defining Fianna’s future under a name that represents strength, stability, and a new beginning, not a legacy of scandal.

Danny Masterson’s Life Behind Bars

Danny Masterson, best known for his role on That ’70s Show, is serving his sentence at North Kern State Prison in Delano, California. Convicted in May 2023 for assaults that occurred two decades earlier, Masterson maintains his innocence and has filed an appeal challenging his conviction.

Legal experts note that even if Masterson’s appeal progresses, it’s unlikely to alter Phillips’ ongoing legal autonomy concerning Fianna. The California court system allows custodial parents to pursue child name changes independently under specific family law statutes (California Code: Civil Procedure 1276).

Masterson’s imprisonment remains one of Hollywood’s most dramatic reckonings involving Scientology members, a dimension that complicated his trial and strained Phillips’ own ties to the controversial church.

Bijou Phillips Today: From Turmoil to Renewal

In the months following her divorce, Bijou Phillips has steadily rebuilt her personal life. In June 2024, she went public with her relationship with Jamie Mazur, a Los Angeles–based entrepreneur best known for founding the denim brand Citizens of Humanity.

A source told People that Mazur has been “a grounding presence” in Bijou’s life, describing her as “smiling again and genuinely optimistic.” The couple was recently spotted attending a charity event in Malibu, where Phillips appeared relaxed and joyful, a stark contrast to her tense public appearances during the trial years.

Those close to her describe this new chapter as “redemption through peace.” Dropping the Masterson surname from her daughter’s identity, they say, is the final act of closure, a way of marking the end of a painful past and asserting a hopeful future.

A Symbol Beyond Celebrity

Phillips’ decision resonates beyond Hollywood gossip. It reflects a broader issue faced by many families navigating post-conviction identity challenges, especially when one parent’s criminal history overshadows the lives of others.

For many, renaming a child represents a reset, an effort to foster dignity and shield them from social judgment. In Bijou’s case, it’s both personal and public: a mother’s way to exhale after years of scrutiny.

Family therapists note that changes like these help “rewire relational narratives” for children of incarcerated parents. In simpler terms, it helps the child and parent write a clean chapter heading on the next page of their story.

Public Perception and Media Impact

Public response to Phillips’ filing has been largely empathetic. Social discussion threads describe it as “heartbreaking but understandable.” Meanwhile, entertainment outlets have generally treated the news seriously, contrasting earlier tabloid sensationalism with more restrained analysis.

In part, that shift reflects how conversations around trauma, accountability, and family identity have evolved, especially in entertainment media. Nearly a decade after the #MeToo movement, stories like Phillips’ are treated less as scandals and more as studies in resilience.

The Bigger Picture

For Bijou Phillips, reclaiming her name and her daughter’s identity marks not just a legal update but a life recalibration. From standing beside a convicted partner to standing firm for her child, her transformation underscores a story of survival, one mirrored by countless women navigating the same heartbreaking crossroads outside the public eye.

Changing a surname won’t erase the past. But in Bijou Phillips’ case, it finally allows her to own her future, and her daughter’s, without the shadow of Danny Masterson looming behind it.
