MrBeast Becomes First YouTuber to Hit 400M Subs, Gets Custom Play Button—But Fans Aren’t Impressed

A milestone for YouTube, but a misfire in design?

YouTube megastar Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast, has once again made history, this time by becoming the first individual content creator to reach 400 million subscribers on the platform. But while the achievement itself is being widely celebrated, the custom Play Button awarded to him by YouTube has ignited controversy online.

On Tuesday, MrBeast posted a photo on Instagram showing off the special trophy handed to him by YouTube CEO Neal Mohan. The gleaming, one-of-a-kind Play Button was created exclusively to mark the unprecedented milestone, crafted from polished metal and featuring a prominent deep blue gemstone—possibly lapis lazuli or azurite—embedded in the center.

Yet despite the moment’s significance, the internet’s reaction to the trophy was mixed at best.

MrBeast’s rise: From obsessed creator to billionaire philanthropist

MrBeast reached the 400 million mark on June 1, 2025, establishing a commanding lead over the second-most-subscribed channel on YouTube, India’s T-Series, which currently has around 299 million subscribers. His rise has been meteoric and built on years of relentless effort. Reflecting on his journey, MrBeast wrote on social media:

“A decade ago before I blew up everyone in my life told me I was too obsessed and constantly told I’d never make it. Despite that, I was in love with making content and grinded every moment my eyes were open for 7 years before anyone started watching. I literally told my mom I’d rather be homeless than do anything else.”

His persistence paid off. According to Celebrity Net Worth, MrBeast became a billionaire earlier this year—one of the world’s youngest, and the only one under 30 who didn’t inherit his fortune. His business empire, Beast Industries, reportedly generated $473 million in revenue in 2024, a figure projected to nearly double in 2025 (source: Business Insider).

Online backlash over Play Button design

Despite the impressive achievement, the design of MrBeast’s 400M Play Button has stirred frustration and even mockery. Reactions on Reddit and other platforms ranged from disappointment to disbelief.

“Now they have to make new play buttons only for Jimmy,” one user quipped, while another noted, “YouTube should come up with a new design.”

A top comment criticized the trophy as being just a variation of an older award:

“It’s just a 10 million button with the center painted in blue.”

Others speculated about the blue center, with some calling it “cheap” while others admired its possible gemstone composition. A few called it “AI-generated,” while one post sarcastically lamented the loss of past YouTube design standards:

“Remember when YouTube’s gold button actually had a golden YouTube logo in the middle?”

The sentiment online was clear: for a record-breaking accomplishment, fans expected a design that felt equally groundbreaking.

Past rivalry and playful challenges

MrBeast’s clash with T-Series is part of YouTube lore. In 2023, he jokingly challenged T-Series CEO Bhushan Kumar to a boxing match, further fueling the rivalry that originally began when PewDiePie competed with the Indian music label for the top subscriber spot.

Though largely in good fun, the rivalry has continued to highlight the global dominance of creators like MrBeast, who command not only massive audiences but also influence in business, philanthropy, and entertainment.

What’s next for MrBeast?

As his subscriber count continues to climb, MrBeast shows no sign of slowing down. With multiple business ventures, a strong social media presence, and continued philanthropic efforts, he remains a singular force on YouTube and beyond. But as the platform evolves, the question remains—will YouTube rise to the occasion with the recognition its top creators deserve?

For now, MrBeast has his trophy. But the internet is still waiting for a Play Button worthy of the numbers.
