Why Did Amal Clooney and George Clooney Decide to Become French Citizens?

George Clooney and Amal Clooney have officially become French citizens, along with their seven-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella. The move, confirmed through French government records, marks a significant shift for one of Hollywood’s most recognizable families and reflects a long-stated desire to step away from celebrity culture in the United States.

While George Clooney continues to hold US citizenship, France has clearly emerged as the family’s primary home. The decision appears rooted less in career considerations and more in lifestyle, privacy, and the kind of upbringing the couple wants for their children.

Why France, and why now?

In recent interviews, Clooney has spoken candidly about wanting a calmer, more grounded life for his family. The couple now lives mainly on a farm in rural France, far removed from the entertainment industry machinery of Los Angeles.

In a February interview with The New York Times, Clooney explained that while he once wanted to escape farm life growing up in Kentucky, he has come full circle. Living in the French countryside, he said, offers something he values more now than ever: normalcy.

Driving tractors, living away from constant attention, and raising children outside Hollywood’s bubble, Clooney suggested, gives his family a chance at a more balanced life.

Concerns about raising children in Hollywood

Clooney has been especially open about his discomfort with raising children in Los Angeles. In an October interview with Esquire, he said he was worried his kids would grow up under unfair scrutiny simply because of who their parents are.

According to Clooney, France offers a culture that is far less obsessed with fame. Public figures, even global celebrities, are generally treated as private individuals outside their professional work. That cultural attitude played a major role in the family’s decision to relocate.

For Clooney, the concern was not just media attention but the broader environment of celebrity comparison and pressure that often surrounds famous families in Hollywood.

France’s strict privacy laws played a key role

Privacy has long been a central issue for the Clooneys. In 2021, George Clooney published an open letter urging media outlets not to publish photos of his children, citing safety risks and the dangers of constant exposure.

France is known for having some of the strongest privacy protections in the world. Under French law, it is illegal to photograph people in private spaces or publish personal details such as home addresses. Even photographing celebrities in public can be restricted unless it is clearly connected to their professional activities.

For a family concerned about paparazzi and security, French law offers legal backing that goes far beyond what is typically available in the US or UK.

Does citizenship change their lives legally?

Becoming French citizens gives the Clooney family long-term legal stability in the country. Citizenship removes uncertainties around residency, visas, and long stays, and allows their children to grow up fully integrated into French society if they choose.

It also reflects a deeper commitment to France, rather than simply maintaining a secondary residence. While the couple still owns homes in England and near George Clooney’s family in Kentucky, France has effectively become their main base.

Amal Clooney, who is British-Lebanese and a globally respected human rights lawyer, is now also a French citizen, further tying the family’s professional and personal lives to Europe.

A consistent message over the years

Although neither George nor Amal Clooney has publicly commented on the citizenship announcement, the move aligns closely with what they have said for years. Their statements consistently emphasize privacy, safety, and giving their children a life that is not defined by fame.

From urging media restraint to openly criticizing Hollywood’s impact on children, the Clooneys’ decision to settle in France appears less sudden and more like the natural conclusion of a long-term plan.

Why this decision stands out

Celebrity relocations are not unusual, but formal citizenship is a stronger signal than simply buying property abroad. It suggests intention and permanence.

For George and Amal Clooney, becoming French citizens is not about rejecting the US or their careers. Instead, it reflects a deliberate choice about where and how they want to raise their children, prioritizing privacy, security, and everyday normalcy over proximity to Hollywood.

TL;DR

George and Amal Clooney became French citizens to secure a quieter, more private life for their family. Living in rural France offers distance from Hollywood, strong privacy laws, and a culture less focused on celebrity, aligning with the couple’s long-standing concerns about raising their children in the spotlight.
