Artificial Intelligence (AI) was initially heralded as a technology to make life easier, but experts have frequently warned of its potential dangers. While movies have dramatized scenarios where AI turns against humanity, the reality is now highlighting another unforeseen consequence. Google’s ambitious efforts to achieve net-zero emissions are faltering as its AI technology significantly increases greenhouse gas emissions.
Google’s greenhouse targets
The surge in emissions, reported by AFP, is primarily due to the high energy demands of Google’s AI-powered data centers. According to Google’s latest environmental report, the company’s climate-changing emissions have increased by 48% over the past five years, contrasting sharply with its goal of becoming carbon-neutral.
In 2023 alone, Google’s total greenhouse gas emissions rose by 13% compared to the previous year. This increase is mainly attributed to the higher energy consumption of its data centers and associated supply chain activities, despite the company’s expanded use of solar and wind energy.
Kate Brandt, Google’s chief sustainability officer, and Benedict Gomes, senior vice president, acknowledged these challenges in their report, stating, “In spite of the progress we’re making, we face significant challenges that we’re actively working through.” They added, “As we further integrate AI into our products, reducing emissions may be challenging due to increasing energy demands from the greater intensity of AI computing, and the emissions associated with the expected increases in our technical infrastructure investment.”
AI and greenhouse emissions
Google is not alone in grappling with rising greenhouse gas emissions driven by AI. Microsoft has also reported a 29% increase in emissions in 2023 compared to 2020, citing ongoing investments in infrastructure needed to support new technologies.
Google emphasized the need for systemic changes, robust government policies, and innovative technologies to build a sustainable future. “We’re committed to collaboration and playing our part, every step of the way,” the report concluded.
As AI continues to evolve and expand, tech giants like Google and Microsoft are faced with the critical task of balancing technological advancement with environmental responsibility.
