More than a decade after Grand Theft Auto V changed open-world gaming, Rockstar Games is finally preparing to release its next major installment. GTA VI is scheduled to arrive on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The wait has been unusually long. GTA V launched in 2013, while Rockstar’s last major release, Red Dead Redemption 2, arrived in 2018. Now, an extended gameplay presentation released on August 27 has given fans roughly 27 minutes of footage captured on a base PlayStation 5.
The footage revealed plenty that Rockstar had already teased, but it also contained smaller details that could have major consequences for how players experience Vice City.
From characters whose bodies and relationships change based on player behavior to a redesigned wanted system and far more reactive NPCs, GTA VI appears to be pushing the series toward a more dynamic open-world experience.
Here are six details you may have missed.
1. Jason and Lucia can physically change based on how you play
GTA VI follows two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, as they navigate the criminal underworld of Leonida, the fictional state where Vice City is located.
The character-switching system is returning, allowing players to move between Jason and Lucia during parts of the game. But the more interesting change may be how the protagonists themselves respond to the way players use them.
Their physical appearance can reportedly change according to their lifestyle. Eating more, exercising and other activities can affect their bodies, echoing a system previously seen in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
That means character customization may no longer be limited to selecting clothes or hairstyles.
If Rockstar carries the system through the full game, players could gradually create noticeably different versions of Jason and Lucia depending on how they spend their time.
The same philosophy appears to extend to their relationship. Jason and Lucia begin the story as a couple, but the state of that relationship can be influenced by player choices.
That could make seemingly insignificant activities matter beyond the immediate gameplay moment.
2. Vice City is built for doing almost anything except the mission
The extended gameplay footage makes one thing clear: Rockstar does not want players to feel as though they are simply moving from one story mission to another.
Jason and Lucia can participate in activities including:
- Parachuting
- Kayaking
- Scuba diving
- Mini-golf
- Nightlife and clubbing
- Swimming and other recreational activities
- Exploring the open world
- Browsing in-game social media
These activities matter because GTA VI’s world appears designed to function independently of the main storyline.
NPCs can encounter one another, react to situations and potentially trigger events without the player deliberately starting a mission.
The result could be an open world where players have reasons to wander even when there is no objective waiting on the map.

3. The tiny details are getting a major upgrade
Rockstar appears to be putting enormous effort into details that most players might notice only subconsciously.
Characters’ hair responds dynamically to movement and airflow, while clothing and accessories react more naturally to motion.
Even traffic behavior has received attention.
Vehicles can use turn signals when changing lanes, a small detail that makes the roads feel more like an actual transportation system rather than a collection of vehicles waiting for the player to pass.
The map presentation is also changing. GTA V’s map had a stylized look that resembled conventional digital mapping, while GTA VI appears to use a more satellite-like visual presentation.
These details may not change the plot, but they contribute to something Rockstar has consistently prioritized: making the world feel alive when the player is doing absolutely nothing.
4. The wanted system could make escaping police much harder
One of the biggest gameplay changes is the return of the six-star wanted system.
GTA V capped police pursuit at five stars. GTA VI brings back the sixth star, potentially signaling a more aggressive escalation system.
But the bigger change is how police appear to track criminals.
Rather than simply forgetting the player after a chase ends, law enforcement can remember aspects of a suspect’s appearance.
That creates an interesting problem for players.
Changing cars may no longer be enough. Players could need to change clothes, alter their appearance or use other methods to reduce the chances of being identified.
Masks can also play a role during robberies and other crimes.
The idea borrows from Red Dead Redemption 2, where the consequences of criminal activity could persist beyond the immediate confrontation.
In GTA VI, a successful escape may therefore require planning before, during and after the crime.
5. Some missions may require players to earn the money to start them
Another intriguing shift is the apparent emphasis on financing criminal operations.
Instead of every major mission simply becoming available through a linear progression, players may have to generate money before certain activities can proceed.
That money can reportedly come from criminal activities such as:
- Stealing cars
- Robbing stores
- Conducting larger heists
- Other illicit activities across Vice City
Vehicle theft itself may also become more sophisticated.
Cars are reportedly categorized according to different tiers, with more expensive vehicles being harder to break into.
That could turn carjacking into more than a quick button press.
A cheap vehicle might be an easy target, while a high-end car could require more effort and carry greater risk.
This creates a feedback loop: players commit smaller crimes to finance bigger ones, gradually building toward more ambitious operations.
6. Red Dead Redemption 2’s influence is everywhere
Perhaps the most interesting part of the gameplay footage is how much GTA VI appears to borrow from systems Rockstar developed for Red Dead Redemption 2.
The world is filled with random encounters and activities that can happen independently of the main story.
NPC interactions are also more nuanced. Players can choose how to approach conversations, including options that allow them to greet or provoke people.
Jason can even interact with animals, including petting a dog.
That does not necessarily confirm the return of Red Dead Redemption’s Honor system, and it would be premature to assume GTA VI will use an identical morality mechanic. But it does show Rockstar carrying forward the idea that small interactions can contribute to a character’s identity.
The safehouses have received a similar treatment.
Instead of serving primarily as places to change clothes or save the game, they can become spaces where Jason and Lucia spend time between criminal operations.
Players can perform activities such as shaving, playing video games with friends and taking drinks from the refrigerator.
The safehouse is therefore becoming part of the world rather than simply functioning as a menu disguised as a building.
What makes GTA VI’s open world different?
The individual features are impressive, but their combination is what could make GTA VI substantially different from its predecessor.
GTA V was already an enormous open-world game, but GTA VI appears to place greater emphasis on persistent reactions.
Your clothes can matter.
Your appearance can change.
Your relationship can evolve.
Police can remember what you look like.
NPCs can react to you.
Random events can happen without being attached to a mission.
Even the places where you live can offer activities beyond the basic functions of a traditional safehouse.
The underlying philosophy seems to be that the player should not always be thinking about what mission comes next.
Instead, the world itself becomes the activity.
What about the GTA VI leaks?
Rockstar has had to contend with extraordinary levels of interest surrounding GTA VI, including major leaks.
Unauthorized footage from an internal development build previously appeared online, exposing unfinished gameplay and development material. Rockstar acknowledged the incident and described the situation as deeply upsetting while assuring fans that development would continue.
The game’s security problems have become part of the unusually long GTA VI story.
GTA V itself was also affected by leaks before its release. Gameplay footage emerged online in 2012, while Sony accidentally made portions of the PlayStation 3 version available to some European customers in 2013.
The difference this time is the scale of anticipation.
More than 13 years have passed since GTA V, giving GTA VI an enormous audience that has spent years dissecting every trailer, screenshot and leaked clip.
That makes even tiny gameplay details potential news.
When does GTA VI release?
Grand Theft Auto VI is currently scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026.
The game is planned for:
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X
- Xbox Series S
Rockstar has not announced a PC release date alongside the console launch.
The game is set in the fictional state of Leonida, with Vice City serving as its central location. Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are the two playable protagonists.
The bottom line
GTA VI’s biggest innovations may not be the obvious ones.
The game’s massive world and photorealistic visuals are easy to spot, but the smaller systems could have a greater effect on how players actually experience it.
Characters can change physically. Relationships can evolve. Police can remember suspects. Cars behave more naturally. Safehouses offer more activities. Random encounters and NPC interactions can make the world feel less scripted.
Most importantly, Rockstar appears to be moving GTA further toward the kind of persistent, reactive open world that it explored in Red Dead Redemption 2.
If these systems work as demonstrated, GTA VI may not simply give players a bigger Vice City. It could give them a world that reacts more consistently to the way they choose to live in it.
And after 13 years of waiting, that may be the detail GTA fans are watching most closely.
