The lead investigator, Xu Yuhui from the CDC, explained that the underground water in the household had been contaminated with larvae. The family likely used this water for brushing teeth or flushing the toilet. Xu noted that water splashes—especially in homes with low sink basins or splash-back toilets—could lead to accidental ingestion of larvae.
Importantly, no other family members showed symptoms, indicating the issue wasn’t contagious but environmental and specific to her exposure.
How Was It Diagnosed and Treated?
After repeated failed diagnoses, the CDC used the worm samples to identify them as larvae of the drain fly species. The case bore a resemblance to a similar infestation seen in a 60-year-old woman a few years ago, though this time, it was more severe due to the child’s age and prolonged exposure.
