Jane Birkin’s Original Hermès Birkin Bag Sells For Record $10 Million At Auction

A Record-Breaking Sale for a Fashion Icon

The original Hermès Birkin bag, created exclusively for the late actress and singer Jane Birkin, sold for a staggering €7 million ($8.2 million) at a Sotheby’s auction in Paris on July 10, 2025. With fees included, the final price reached €8.6 million ($10.1 million)—making it the most expensive handbag ever sold at auction.

The winning bid came from a private Japanese collector, though their identity remains undisclosed. The sale shattered the previous record of $513,040, held by a rare Himalayan crocodile Kelly bag.

How the Bidding Unfolded

  • The auction opened at €1 million ($1.17 million).
  • Bids skyrocketed past €2M, €3M, €4M, and €5M in rapid succession.
  • The final jump—from €6.8M to €7M—drew gasps and applause from the crowd.

The Birth of the Birkin—A Chance Encounter on a Plane

The Birkin bag’s origin story is as legendary as its price tag. In the early 1980s, Jane Birkin found herself on a London-bound flight sitting next to Jean-Louis Dumas, then-CEO of Hermès.

After spilling the contents of her wicker basket, Birkin lamented the lack of stylish yet practical bags for mothers. Dumas sketched a design on an air sickness bag, and by 1984, Hermès crafted the first Birkin prototype—a one-of-a-kind piece bearing her initials, “J.B.”

What Made This Bag Unique?

✔ Non-removable shoulder strap (later models had detachable straps).
✔ Gilded brass hardware and bottom studs for durability.
✔ A built-in nail clipper—Birkin preferred short, natural nails.
✔ Handcrafted black leather, differing from later commercial versions.

From Practical Bag to Billion-Dollar Status Symbol

Though designed as a functional tote for Birkin’s busy life as a mother and artist, the bag evolved into a global luxury phenomenon:

  • Years-long waitlists and five-figure price tags for standard Birkins.
  • A staple for celebrities, from Victoria Beckham to Cardi B.
  • Featured in films, TV, and music, cementing its pop culture status.

Birkin herself once joked:

“My obituaries will probably say, ‘Like the bag’ or something. Well, it could be worse.”

Where Has the Bag Been Since 1984?

  • 1985: Hermès gifted the prototype to Birkin.
  • 1994: She auctioned it for AIDS charity.
  • 2000: Sold again to a private collector.
  • 2025: Fetched €7M at Sotheby’s—43 years after its creation.

Why Did This Bag Sell for So Much?

1. Historical Significance

  • The first-ever Birkin, predating all commercial versions.
  • Directly tied to Jane Birkin’s legacy as a fashion and music icon.

2. Rarity

  • Only one exists with these exact specifications.
  • Never mass-produced—unlike later Birkins.

3. Celebrity & Pop Culture Cachet

  • Birkin’s association with French New Wave cinema and Serge Gainsbourg.
  • The bag’s role in luxury fashion history.

The Future of the Birkin Market

This sale could reshape luxury auctions:

  • Vintage Hermès pieces may surge in value.
  • Celebrity-owned fashion items could become new investment assets.
