Nearly $100 million worth of Binance Coin was taken in what appears to be the most recent theft involving digital assets, further destabilising an already disastrous year for cryptocurrencies.
An exploit occurred on a bridge connecting blockchains, according to the billionaire co-founder of Binance, the biggest cryptocurrency exchange in the world, Changpeng “CZ” Zhao. However, Zhao stated on Twitter on Friday that the issue is “contained now.”
Crypto attacks cost close to $2 billion this year
An official from the Binance-supported blockchain BNB Chain estimates that the incident included between $100 million and $110 million in digital tokens. A minimum of $7 million in stolen funds has already been blocked, the person added.
The bridge, BSC Token Hub, has been disabled. Crypto attacks cost close to $2 billion this year, and many of them were conducted by groups with ties to North Korea. Cross-chain bridges used to transfer coins across blockchains have been a frequent target.
Binance will probably cover any funds that the hackers steal
The currency is burdened by the theft of tokens worth about $100 million. One of the most well-known ecosystems affected is that of Binance. Zhao wrote on Twitter that “Binance will probably cover any funds that the hackers steal.”
The BNB Chain claimed to be working with security organizations to stop the transfer of stolen funds. Binance Coin, also known as BNB, was trading at about $285 as of 10:08 a.m. in Tokyo, down as much as 3.3% on Friday.
The crypto industry has been completely destroyed by hacks and a dramatic market collapse that decreased the value of digital assets by approximately $2 trillion. The recent developments were well received by the larger cryptocurrency markets. The cost of Bitcoin stayed steady at around $20,000.
