Is the Book of Enoch Really About Antarctica? The Viral Theory, and What Scholars Actually Say

Antarctica

A centuries-old religious text that never became part of the Bible, used by most Christians, is at the center of a viral online conspiracy theory. Social media posts claim the Book of Enoch describes a hidden prison beneath Antarctica where fallen angels remain chained until the end of time.

The theory combines passages from the ancient text with modern mysteries, including NASA’s unexplained Antarctic radio signals, subglacial lakes, and the continent’s vast ice sheet. But while the idea has captured attention online, biblical scholars and scientists say there is no evidence linking the Book of Enoch to Antarctica.

Here’s what the ancient text actually says, why the theory has gained traction, and what experts make of the claims.

TL;DR

  • The Book of Enoch is an ancient Jewish religious text that is not included in the Bible used by most Christian denominations.
  • A viral theory claims the book describes a prison for fallen angels beneath Antarctica.
  • Supporters cite references to the “ends of the earth,” imprisoned Watchers, and sealed chambers.
  • The theory also points to NASA’s ANITA experiment, which detected unusual radio signals beneath Antarctic ice.
  • Biblical scholars say the passages are symbolic and belong to the tradition of Jewish apocalyptic literature, not descriptions of real-world geography.
  • Scientists have not linked Antarctica—or ANITA’s radio signals—to any supernatural phenomenon.

What Is the Book of Enoch?

The Book of Enoch, also known as 1 Enoch, is an ancient Jewish religious work traditionally attributed to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah mentioned briefly in the Book of Genesis.

Although influential in early Judaism and among some early Christians, it was excluded from the biblical canon accepted by most Christian churches. The major exception is the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, which continues to recognise it as scripture.

The text explores themes including:

  • The rebellion of fallen angels known as the Watchers
  • The creation of the Nephilim (giants)
  • Divine judgment
  • Heaven and hell
  • Future judgment of humanity
  • Visions of cosmic events

Its vivid imagery has fascinated historians, theologians, and readers for centuries.

Why Are People Linking the Book of Enoch to Antarctica?

The modern theory is largely driven by selective interpretations of several passages.

Supporters argue that descriptions of:

  • sealed chambers,
  • frozen storehouses,
  • imprisoned heavenly beings,
  • cosmic mountains, and
  • “the ends of the earth”

are not symbolic but references to Antarctica.

According to the theory, the continent’s harsh climate, isolated geography, and unexplored subglacial landscape make it the ideal location for the prison described in the ancient text.

However, these claims rely on interpretation rather than direct textual evidence.

The Story of the Watchers

One of the Book of Enoch’s most famous narratives concerns the Watchers, a group of approximately 200 angels assigned to observe humanity.

According to the text:

  • They abandoned heaven.
  • They took human wives.
  • They taught forbidden knowledge, including warfare and sorcery.
  • Their offspring became the Nephilim, giant beings blamed for widespread violence and corruption.

As punishment, God commands that the Watchers be chained and confined until the final judgment.

It is this imprisonment that conspiracy theorists associate with Antarctica.

Why Antarctica?

Supporters of the theory often point to several features of Antarctica:

The continent’s isolation

Antarctica remains Earth’s least populated continent, making it an attractive setting for hidden-world theories.

Miles of ice

The Antarctic ice sheet conceals enormous areas that remain largely unexplored.

Lake Vostok

Lake Vostok is one of Earth’s largest subglacial lakes, buried beneath roughly 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) of ice.

Its isolation has fueled decades of speculation in popular culture despite scientific research focusing on its unique microbial ecosystem.

Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains

These mountains are completely buried beneath Antarctica’s ice sheet.

Because they cannot be seen from the surface, they have become another favorite subject of speculative theories.

None of these geological features, however, provide evidence supporting claims made about the Book of Enoch.

How Did NASA’s ANITA Experiment Become Part of the Story?

Another reason the theory has spread is its connection to NASA’s Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment.

ANITA is designed to detect ultra-high-energy particles originating from space by monitoring radio waves over Antarctica.

During flights in 2006 and 2014, researchers recorded unusual radio events that appeared to emerge from beneath the ice.

Those observations sparked widespread discussion online.

Some conspiracy theories claim the signals originated from:

  • a hidden underground civilization,
  • an ancient prison,
  • another dimension, or
  • the imprisoned Watchers described in Enoch.

However, none of those claims are supported by scientific evidence.

Researchers have instead explored explanations involving:

  • unusual cosmic-ray interactions,
  • neutrino physics,
  • instrument limitations, and
  • other high-energy particle phenomena.

The signals remain scientifically interesting, but they have not been connected to biblical narratives.

What Do Biblical Scholars Say?

Biblical scholars overwhelmingly reject the Antarctica interpretation.

Their reasoning is straightforward.

The Book of Enoch belongs to a literary genre known as Jewish apocalyptic literature, which uses symbolic imagery to describe spiritual realities rather than physical geography.

Expressions such as:

  • “the ends of the earth,”
  • heavenly mountains,
  • fiery prisons,
  • cosmic gates, and
  • celestial storehouses

appear frequently in ancient Jewish writings.

These descriptions were intended to communicate theological ideas about divine judgment, heaven, and evil—not provide a map of Earth.

Importantly:

  • Antarctica is never mentioned.
  • No recognizable geographic coordinates appear.
  • No passage identifies a physical location matching the modern Antarctic continent.

Most scholars therefore interpret the prison of the Watchers as part of the text’s supernatural cosmology rather than a hidden place beneath Earth’s ice.

Why Do These Theories Become So Popular?

The Antarctica theory illustrates how ancient texts and modern mysteries can combine into compelling online narratives.

Several factors contribute to its popularity:

Ancient mystery

The Book of Enoch contains stories unfamiliar to many readers because it is absent from most Bibles.

Antarctica’s reputation

Its remoteness and limited accessibility naturally invite speculation.

Scientific uncertainty

Whenever scientific research leaves unanswered questions—as with ANITA’s unusual radio detections—speculative explanations often fill the gap.

Social media algorithms

Short videos and viral posts frequently present isolated passages without historical or theological context, making extraordinary claims appear more convincing than they are.

Is There Any Evidence Supporting the Antarctica Theory?

Based on currently available historical, theological, and scientific evidence, the answer is no.

There is:

  • no passage in the Book of Enoch identifying Antarctica,
  • no archaeological evidence linking the text to the continent,
  • no scientific evidence suggesting imprisoned beings beneath Antarctic ice,
  • and no connection established between ANITA’s radio signals and biblical accounts.

The theory remains an internet conspiracy built on symbolic interpretations rather than documented evidence.

Why the Book of Enoch Still Matters

Although the Antarctica claims lack scholarly support, the Book of Enoch remains an important historical document.

It offers valuable insight into Jewish beliefs during the Second Temple period and influenced ideas found in early Christianity, particularly regarding angels, demons, divine judgment, and the coming Messiah.

For historians and theologians, the text is significant because it helps explain how religious thought evolved before the New Testament era—not because it predicts hidden locations beneath Antarctica.
