New research reveals the exact location where the asteroid which caused dinosaur extinction struck the earth

Millions of years ago, dinosaurs roamed freely around the world. However, a huge asteroid changed their fate. New research reveals the exact location where it struck the earth. Here’s all about it.

The location of the asteroid that killed dinosaurs found

New research reveals the exact location where the asteroid which caused dinosaur extinction struck the earth

The extinction of dinosaurs is attributed to the impact of a humungous asteroid. Experts have been able to point out the exact location of the asteroid’s impact on the ground. The collision occurred around 66 million years ago and on that day, the event ended the dinosaurs’ reign on earth. As per experts, the dinosaur-killing asteroid was 10.6 to 80.9 km in diameter. They struck the earth in Chicxulub, Mexico, near the Yucatán Peninsula.

The impact of the huge asteroid created a 140-kilometer-wide crater on the location. Additionally, it caused large tidal waves of huge heights. According to research, the tsunamis were over 150 feet tall and capable of pummeling North American shores. The soring heat from the asteroid’s impact might have led to raging wildfires. Additionally, the asteroids might have led to an increase in earthquakes and volcanic activity. According to the researchers, these apocalyptic conditions in combination might be behind the extinction of dinosaurs on our planet. Hence, this was behind the death of a minimum of 75 percent of lifeforms on earth.

More on the research’s findings

As per a France 5 report, researchers also discovered the origin of the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. As per their research, it would have originated between the orbit of Mars and Jupiter. They added that while such an asteroid could impact Earth again, it is a part of a 250 million-year cycle. Hence, it is likely going to miss both our and our future generations’ lifetimes. So, when this asteroid does come again, humans will be technologically strong enough to deal with it.
