First Medical Evacuation in ISS History: NASA to Bring Crew-11 Home on Jan 14

NASA has announced the early return of astronauts from the Crew-11 mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), marking the first medical evacuation in the history of the orbiting laboratory.

The space agency said on Friday, January 9, that SpaceX’s four-member Crew-11 mission will depart the ISS earlier than planned due to an undisclosed medical concern. The undocking is scheduled for January 14.

Why NASA Is Bringing Crew-11 Home Early

NASA confirmed that the decision was made to allow for better medical diagnosis and treatment on Earth. While the agency acknowledged a medical issue affecting the mission, it did not specify which crew member was involved or the nature of the condition.

The announcement followed NASA’s decision earlier this week to postpone a planned spacewalk. That spacewalk, which was scheduled to be conducted by astronauts Mike Fincke and Zena Cardman, was delayed due to what the agency described only as a “medical concern.”

“This is not an operational issue. This was not an injury that occurred in the pursuit of operations,” said Dr. James Polk, NASA’s chief health and medical officer, during a press conference. He added that the challenges of diagnosing certain conditions in microgravity contributed to the decision to return the crew to Earth.

When and How Crew-11 Will Return

According to NASA, the Crew Dragon capsule carrying the Crew-11 astronauts will undock from the ISS at approximately 5 p.m. EST (2200 GMT) on Wednesday. The spacecraft is expected to splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California at around 3:40 a.m. EST (0840 GMT) on Thursday, January 15.

NASA emphasized that the return schedule remains dependent on favorable weather conditions in the designated splashdown zone.

Who Is Aboard the Crew-11 Mission

Crew-11 consists of four astronauts representing three space agencies:

  • Mike Fincke, NASA
  • Zena Cardman, NASA
  • Kimiya Yui, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency
  • Oleg Platonov, Roscosmos

The crew arrived at the ISS on August 2 for what was expected to be a six-month mission. They were originally scheduled to remain in orbit until late February 2026. However, the early undocking will shorten their stay by several weeks.

Their replacement mission, Crew-12, is not expected to launch until at least February 15.

What Happens on the ISS After Crew-11 Departs

Following Crew-11’s departure, three astronauts will remain aboard the International Space Station. NASA astronaut Christopher Williams and Russian cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikayev arrived at the ISS on November 27 aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, according to Space.com.

NASA officials said station operations will continue as planned with the reduced crew until the arrival of the next mission.

Why This Moment Is Significant

This marks the first time NASA has ordered a medical evacuation from the ISS, highlighting the complexities of providing healthcare in microgravity. While astronauts receive extensive medical screening before launch, space agencies acknowledge that some conditions are difficult to diagnose or manage without Earth-based equipment.

NASA stressed that the decision was precautionary and centered on ensuring the long-term health of the crew.

TL;DR

NASA will return the Crew-11 astronauts from the ISS earlier than planned due to an unspecified medical concern, marking the first medical evacuation in ISS history. The Crew Dragon capsule is scheduled to undock on January 14, with a Pacific Ocean splashdown expected the following day, weather permitting.
