
NASA scientists have discovered clear evidence of a polar cyclone on Uranus for the first time. The phenomena were witnessed at the planet’s north pole. Uranus could be a considerably more mysterious world than we previously thought. According to NASA, the latest discoveries reveal a “broad truth” about all planets in our solar system with a significant atmosphere. “Whether the planets are primarily made of rock or gas, their atmospheres show signs of a swirling vortex at the poles,” according to the agency.
Uranian polar features are similar to those of other gas giants
Researchers discovered a “compact feature” at Uranus’ north pole by observing radio waves radiated by the planet, which appeared to be warmer than its surroundings. “This feature likely indicates the presence of a polar cyclone” notes the study published in Geophysical Research Letters. Further, Uranus’s polar cyclone “shows similarities to polar features observed on other giant planets in the solar system.”
Observations were made with the help of the very large array observatory
Scientists were able to examine Uranus’ clouds in greater detail because of the Very Large Array observatory in New Mexico. The observations, made in 2015, 2021, and 2022, delved deeper into Uranus’ atmosphere than any previous measurements, according to NASA. The researchers discovered that the circulating air at the planet’s north pole appeared to be warmer and dryer, which are key features of a severe cyclone.

The latest discovery relied heavily on Uranus’ orbital location. Uranus’ entire circle around the Sun takes 84 years. For many decades, the planet’s poles were not pointing toward Earth. However, scientists have been able to gain clearer views and look deeper into the planet’s atmosphere at the poles starting around 2015.

“These observations tell us a lot more about the story of Uranus. It’s a much more dynamic world than you might think,” said Alex Akins, the study’s lead author. “It isn’t just a plain blue ball of gas. There’s a lot happening under the hood.”
The cyclone on Uranus is similar to those seen on Saturn
The newly discovered cyclone on Uranus, with its compact shape and heated and dry air in its core, is similar to Saturn’s cyclones. According to NASA in a blog post, cyclones or anti-cyclones, which rotate in the opposite direction, have now been detected near the poles of every planet in our solar system except Mercury.
