The Jalen Williams injury is a fractured left fibula and a dislocated left ankle, and he needs surgery, Thunder general manager Sam Presti said Monday. Guard Cason Wallace has a torn labrum in his left shoulder and also needs surgery. The team has given no return date for either player and says it will set timelines after the operations.
Both injuries happened in Sunday’s 108-101 win over the Los Angeles Clippers. It means the Thunder lose an All-Star wing and an All-Defensive guard in the first week of the season. Oklahoma City entered the year as a co-favorite with the Spurs to win the title, the Associated Press noted.
What happened against the Clippers
Williams went down on a drive with 1:14 left, fouled under the basket, and the game stopped for about five minutes while medical staff worked on him, the AP reported. He left on a stretcher and gave the crowd two thumbs-up, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon wrote.
Wallace was hurt in the first quarter when he ran into a moving screen set by Clippers center Isaiah Jackson, according to ESPN. The 22-year-old was an All-Defensive pick last season. He signed a five-year, $139 million extension the week before the injury.
Presti did not soften it. “Tough night last night,” he said at a news conference, adding: “There’s no way to paint that differently.” He also said: “We say within our walls all the time there’s a difference between being positive and being optimistic.” On the medical outlook he chose the second word, saying the team is “extremely optimistic about the recovery for both the players,” per the AP.
Of Williams, he said: “Dub, as everybody knows, is as tough as they come.” The Oklahoman reported that Presti described Williams as in good spirits.
What a fibula fracture with a dislocation usually means
The fibula is the thinner of the two lower-leg bones. A break at its lower end is a lateral malleolus fracture, part of the ankle joint. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ OrthoInfo guide to ankle fractures, most displaced fractures that come with a dislocation need surgery. Surgeons often repair the fibula with a plate and screws, or with a rod or screw.
The same guide sets out the general clock. Most ankle fractures take at least six weeks for early healing and 10 to 12 weeks to heal completely. Damage to ligaments and tendons can take longer. Most people return to normal activities in three to four months, the AAOS says, but sports can take longer, and full recovery from some fractures can take up to two years.
Those are figures for the general public, not for a 25-year-old who cuts and jumps for a living. An NBA return also needs strength, conditioning and game rhythm, not just a healed bone. The Thunder have not said which bones or ligaments the surgery will address beyond the fibula and the dislocation, so any timeline from outside the team is a guess. The AP said it is “reasonable to think” Williams could miss the rest of the season.
The closest NBA precedent is Gordon Hayward
The case most fans reach for is Gordon Hayward’s. In his Celtics debut on Oct. 17, 2017, he dislocated his left ankle and fractured his left tibia.
He had surgery the next night, and his agent said he was expected to miss the rest of the season, NBA.com reported at the time. His next game was a preseason game on Sept. 28, 2018, almost a year later, according to ESPN.
The comparison is imperfect. Hayward broke the tibia, the larger, weight-bearing bone, while Williams’ fracture is in the fibula. Medicine and rehab have also moved on in nine years. What the two cases share is a dislocated ankle that needed surgery early in a season.
The worry for Oklahoma City is the pile-up. Williams played the 2025 title run with a torn ligament in his right wrist, then missed 49 regular-season games last season with wrist and hamstring problems, according to ESPN and the AP. He is in the first season of a five-year, $239 million max contract, according to ESPN.
Wallace’s shoulder runs on a shorter clock
The labrum is a rim of cartilage around the shoulder socket that deepens it and anchors stabilizing ligaments, OrthoInfo explains. For many tears, surgeons reattach the labrum to the bone with suture anchors. The Thunder have not said what type of tear Wallace has.
Patients typically wear a sling for two to six weeks, avoid lifting more than about five pounds for 12 weeks, and the shoulder should be fully healed in about four to six months. Athletes can usually start sport-specific work around 12 weeks after surgery, the AAOS says.
If Wallace has surgery in the coming days, that general four-to-six-month window would close between late February and late April, though an NBA return takes more than a healed shoulder. The AP said such procedures “typically require several months of rehab,” and the team has set no date.
How the disabled player exception would work
The AP wrote that the Thunder will “likely make some decisions about applying for a disabled player exception” in time. The rules sit in Article VII, Section 6(c) of the NBA-NBPA collective bargaining agreement, which we read in full on this point.
A team may apply from July 1 through Jan. 15. An NBA-designated physician decides whether the injury makes it “substantially more likely than not” that the player can’t play through the following June 15.
If granted, the team can sign one replacement to a one-season contract, or trade for a player with only one season left on his deal. The exception expires on March 10.
The value is the lesser of half the injured player’s salary or the non-taxpayer mid-level exception. The league set that mid-level at $15.044 million for 2026-27 in its salary-cap announcement.
Williams’ contract averages about $47.8 million a season, so half his salary is well above that cap. By our reading, an exception for Williams would top out at $15.044 million. ESPN’s front-office analysts put it at “$15 million” in their look at OKC’s options.
There are two catches. Using more than $6.9 million of it would push the Thunder over the second apron, ESPN wrote. The CBA also says the exception disappears if Williams returns to play before the team uses it.
The test also cuts against the team’s public optimism. To get the money, an NBA doctor has to judge that Williams likely won’t play through June 15, which covers most of the playoffs.
The league would judge Wallace’s case separately, and any exception for him would be capped at half his current salary.
What comes after surgery
The next hard information is the post-surgery update, which Presti said will carry the first timelines. After that, the date that matters most is Jan. 15, the CBA’s deadline to apply for an exception.
Oklahoma City has absorbed long absences before. Chet Holmgren missed his entire rookie season with a foot injury, and Nikola Topic played 10 games over two seasons after a torn ACL and testicular cancer, the AP noted.
“We can’t get to the point where we feel like this is a common situation,” Presti said. “But that being said, it’s our situation.”
