Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 39, bringing an extraordinary 21-year career with Argentina to a close. The decision comes after Messi led Argentina to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, where they lost 1-0 to Spain in extra time.

Messi leaves the national team as Argentina’s all-time leader in both appearances and goals, with 207 caps and 125 goals. His international career ultimately included a World Cup triumph, two Copa América titles and the Finalissima.

The announcement does not mean Messi has retired from soccer altogether. He remains a club player with Inter Miami.

Why did Lionel Messi retire from international football?

Messi confirmed his decision in an emotional social media message, saying the decision hurt but that he understood the time had come.

He said he had given everything to Argentina and now had “nothing left to give,” while pointing to the talented younger players coming through the national team.

The timing follows Argentina’s run to the 2026 World Cup final. Messi’s final appearance for his country came against Spain, with Argentina losing 1-0 after extra time.

Messi originally wrote his farewell message shortly after that final but did not publish it immediately. FIFA reported that he later shared the message following the death of his father, Jorge Messi, in August.

What are Lionel Messi’s Argentina career numbers?

Messi finishes his international career with statistics that underline the scale of his contribution to Argentina.

Argentina appearances207
Argentina goals125
World Cup appearances34
World Cup goals21
World Cup assists12
Copa América appearances39

Messi is Argentina’s most-capped player and its leading scorer by a substantial margin. His 125 international goals are more than twice the 54 scored by previous Argentina record-holder Gabriel Batistuta.

How did Messi perform at the FIFA World Cup?

Messi played at a record six World Cups: 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026.

Across those tournaments, he made 34 appearances and scored 21 goals.

That places him second on the all-time World Cup scoring list, behind France’s Kylian Mbappé, who finished the 2026 tournament with 22 goals.

Messi also holds the record for the most World Cup matches played by a player. His 34 appearances put him ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 27.

Messi’s six World Cups

  • 2006: Made his World Cup debut with Argentina.
  • 2010: Reached the quarterfinals.
  • 2014: Led Argentina to the final and won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
  • 2018: Argentina reached the round of 16.
  • 2022: Captained Argentina to the World Cup title and won another Golden Ball.
  • 2026: Reached another final before Argentina lost to Spain.

Messi is also the only player to win the World Cup Golden Ball twice, receiving the award in 2014 and 2022.

What trophies did Messi win with Argentina?

For much of his early international career, Messi’s relationship with Argentina was defined by disappointment.

He lost the 2014 World Cup final to Germany and suffered defeats in the 2015 and 2016 Copa América finals. In 2016, he briefly announced his international retirement before returning to the national team.

The comeback ultimately transformed his Argentina legacy.

His major international trophies

2021 Copa América: Messi finally won his first major senior international trophy with Argentina.

2022 Finalissima: Argentina defeated Italy to win the competition between the Copa América and European Championship winners.

2022 FIFA World Cup: Messi captained Argentina to the title in Qatar, scoring twice in the final against France and converting his penalty in the shootout.

2024 Copa América: Argentina successfully defended its continental title.

That run turned what had once been a story of international heartbreak into one of the most decorated careers in Argentina’s history. (Reuters)

Why is Messi’s World Cup record so remarkable?

Messi’s World Cup statistics go beyond his goal total.

He finished with 12 assists at the tournament and holds the record for the most World Cup knockout-stage assists, according to the supplied statistics.

His 34 appearances are also a tournament record, while his 21 goals put him just one behind Mbappé.

Argentina’s Football Association says Messi also holds the record for World Cup wins by a player, with 23 victories.

Perhaps most remarkably, during Argentina’s 2022 championship campaign, Messi became the first player to score in every knockout stage of a single World Cup—from the round of 16 through the final.

What does Messi’s retirement mean for Argentina?

Messi’s departure marks the end of one of the defining eras in Argentina’s soccer history.

He was not simply the team’s leading scorer. For more than two decades, Argentina’s national team was closely associated with the No. 10 shirt and Messi’s role as its creative and attacking leader.

But his farewell also reflects a changing team.

Messi specifically pointed to the emergence of younger players who deserve opportunities. Argentina now has to begin the difficult transition from a generation built around one of the greatest players in soccer history to a team capable of competing without him.

That transition will be one of the biggest challenges facing coach Lionel Scaloni.

Is Lionel Messi retiring from soccer completely?

No.

Messi’s announcement concerns his international career with Argentina, not his club career.

The 39-year-old continues to play club soccer for Inter Miami. His international retirement therefore ends his time with the Argentina national team but does not necessarily mark the end of his professional playing career.

That distinction is important because reports of Messi’s “retirement” could otherwise be interpreted as his retirement from soccer altogether.

Messi’s Argentina legacy in numbers

Messi leaves the national team with a collection of records that may take decades to challenge:

  • 207 Argentina appearances
  • 125 Argentina goals
  • 34 World Cup appearances
  • 21 World Cup goals
  • 12 World Cup assists
  • 6 World Cup tournaments
  • 2 World Cup Golden Balls
  • 1 World Cup title
  • 2 Copa América titles
  • 1 Finalissima title

He also leaves as Argentina’s undisputed all-time leading scorer and appearance holder.

For Messi, however, the most important part of the story may not be the records.

His Argentina career began with years of criticism and ended with him having won the trophies that had once seemed beyond his reach. The 2022 World Cup finally delivered the prize that had defined so much of his international career.

Now, after six World Cups and more than two decades in the national shirt, Messi has decided that the chapter is over.

As he put it in his farewell message, “the time has come.”
