Meta plans to launch smartwatches with cameras

Bloomberg reports, Meta formerly known as Facebook plans to launch smartwatches with cameras to compete with Apple Watch.

During the Connect conference, CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled plans for Metaverse. It will be a platform combining virtual, augmented, and mixed reality into a single platform. It will have the integration of apps such as WhatsApp and Instagram. Reports from Bloomberg state, Meta is also working on a smartwatch that will have a camera and will compete with the Apple Watch. The smartwatch was found inside the ‘FacebookView’ app, which is used to control Ray-Ban Stories.

The image of the watch was discovered and shared with Bloomberg by app developer Steve Moser. According to the leaked image, Meta’s next smartwatch will have a spherical screen with curve corners. A front-facing camera at the bottom of the display, and a controller button on the right side. Its huge display is designed to seem like an Apple Inc. watch. It is exactly the opposite of the more simple fitness trackers in the market by Google’s Fitbit and Garmin Ltd.

Facebook is yet to officially comment on the development but by the looks of it, Meta’s new entrant is planning to give a tough competition to superwatches like Apple, Garmin, and Fitbit.

Superwatches

The existence of the image in the glasses app, named Facebook View, will imply that the watch can operate via the app. The app will be available on iPhones and Android devices. Moreover, software code suggests the name of the watch may be “Milan.” According to the code, the camera will be able to capture both photos and films. One can download them to the phone.

A foray into smartwatches would exacerbate Meta’s feud with Apple. It has fought over app store restrictions and privacy improvements to the iPhone operating system. Apple intends to release its first mixed-reality headgear as early as next year. It is competing with the impending high-end Meta headset.
