South Korean designer develops a ‘Third Eye’ for smartphone addicts

Are you a smartphone zombie? Have you ever come close to an injury while browsing on the go? Well, it is a worry of the past now. South Korean designer, Paeng Min-wook developed ‘Third Eye’ a robotic eyeball that you can strap on to your forehead and browse on the go without worrying about injuries.

“It is so cool and interesting! We can easily bump into each other on the street while using smartphones. I may not need it now, but I’d like to buy it when they sell it later,” said Shin Jae-ik, a 23-year-old passerby who was enamored with the idea.

Third Eye: The future of mankind?

The device is a part of the Min-wook’s artwork titled Phono Sapiens. It has a translucent eyelid that opens when it senses the user’s head moves down to look at their smartphone. The sensor activates and beeps to alert the user when they are 1 to 2 meters in line with an obstruction. It’s handy if you want to check your phone during errands.

“This is the look of future mankind with three eyes. As we cannot take our eyes off from smartphones, the extra eye will be needed in the future,” said Min-wook. The 28-year-old is a postgraduate in design engineering at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College. He demonstrated the device in Seoul, South Korea this week and received a lot of attention from passersby. “I thought he looked like an alien with an eye on his forehead. These days many young people can get into accidents while using their mobile phones. This would be good for them,” they said.
