Future Queen of Netherlands Targeted in Deepfake Pornography Scandal

Quick Summary

Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands has again been targeted in a deepfake pornography scandal, with videos spread online before being removed in a joint operation by Dutch authorities and the FBI. This marks the second time she has been victimized. Amalia has responded by researching AI law and human rights, underlining the urgent need for stronger safeguards against non-consensual deepfake content.

What happened in the deepfake scandal?

Princess Catharina-Amalia, the 21-year-old heir to the Netherlands throne, has once again become the victim of a deepfake pornography attack. According to reports from Stuff.co and Dutch media, her likeness was digitally superimposed onto pornographic videos that were then circulated across several adult websites, including the now-defunct platform MrDeepFakes.

The scandal did not target the princess alone. At least 70 prominent Dutch women—including celebrities, politicians, and public figures—were also victimized in the same scheme. Following a joint investigation involving Dutch police, the FBI, and law enforcement in other countries, most of the videos have been taken down.

No arrests have been made so far in connection with the specific videos involving the princess. Authorities have identified a 73-year-old man from Noord-Holland suspected of producing some of the manipulated content, but the investigation remains ongoing.

Why deepfake pornography is a growing threat

Deepfake technology uses artificial intelligence to manipulate images and video, making it appear as if a person is doing or saying something they never actually did. While some uses of AI-generated video—such as in film and entertainment—are harmless, its application in non-consensual pornography has raised serious ethical and legal concerns worldwide.

  • In the Netherlands, the creation and distribution of such material is punishable by up to one year in prison. Repeat offenders may face harsher penalties.
  • The FBI’s involvement in this case underscores the international scope of the problem. Once content is uploaded, it often spreads rapidly across borders, complicating enforcement.
  • Victims, especially women in public life, are disproportionately targeted. For young royals like Amalia, the damage is not just reputational but deeply personal, as such attacks intersect with issues of consent, privacy, and dignity.

This is not the first time Princess Amalia has faced such abuse. A similar scandal emerged in 2022, making this a recurring violation that highlights the difficulty of preventing AI-driven exploitation once it begins.

How Princess Amalia responded

Rather than remaining silent, Princess Amalia has chosen to confront the issue academically and publicly. She wrote her undergraduate thesis on the intersection of AI, law, and fundamental rights. Titled “Beyond Disclosure: Bridging the Gap Between the Artificial Intelligence Act and the Charter of Fundamental Rights with Deepfaked Bodies”, her research tackled the very issues she has personally endured.

Her choice of topic demonstrates both resilience and foresight. By framing deepfake abuse as not only a personal attack but also a human rights challenge, she has aligned her voice with a broader movement calling for stronger regulations on AI misuse.

Who is Princess Catharina-Amalia?

  • Full name: Catharina-Amalia Beatrix Carmen Victoria
  • Born: December 7, 2003, in The Hague, Netherlands
  • Parents: King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima
  • Title: Princess of Orange, heir apparent to the Dutch throne

Amalia recently graduated from the University of Amsterdam with a degree in Politics, Psychology, Law, and Economics. She plans to continue her studies in Dutch Law while also enrolling in Defensity College, a two-year program combining military service with academic work.

Despite her clear path toward becoming queen, the princess has been candid about her ambivalence toward the role, describing the pressures of public life as daunting.

Why this matters beyond the royal family

The targeting of a future queen underscores a broader societal concern: if the heir to a European throne can be exploited with deepfakes, so can anyone.

  • For everyday citizens, the scandal is a reminder that personal images and videos can be misused without consent.
  • For policymakers, it highlights the urgency of updating digital laws to address emerging AI threats. The European Union’s AI Act and various national regulations are steps forward, but enforcement remains fragmented.
  • For platforms and tech companies, it raises questions about responsibility. Should websites hosting deepfakes face stricter liability? Should AI models used for image manipulation be regulated more tightly?

Experts argue that prevention requires both legal reform and technological safeguards, such as digital watermarks or content authenticity checks.

What happens next?

Dutch authorities, in cooperation with international partners, continue to investigate the matter. The fact that this marks the second time Princess Amalia has been targeted raises the likelihood of stronger calls for deterrent penalties.

At the same time, the princess’s own advocacy—through her academic work and public profile, may help reshape how Europe deals with the growing menace of deepfakes.

For the Netherlands, the scandal affects not just privacy but also the dignity of its royal institution. For the world, it is a stark case study in how AI can be weaponized against women and why legal systems must evolve quickly to keep pace.
