Putin Congratulates Mojtaba Khamenei As Iran’s New Supreme Leader

Putin expresses solidarity with Tehran after leadership transition

Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended congratulations to Mojtaba Khamenei following his appointment as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, pledging Moscow’s continued support for Tehran amid an intensifying regional conflict.

The leadership shift came after the death of Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed in US-Israeli airstrikes last week. The strikes have sharply escalated tensions in the Middle East and triggered a series of retaliatory actions by Iran.

In a message addressed to Mojtaba Khamenei, Putin reiterated Russia’s longstanding alliance with Tehran.

“I would like to reaffirm our unwavering support for Tehran and solidarity with our Iranian friends,” he said, adding that “Russia has been and will remain a reliable partner” to Iran.

The statement reflects Moscow’s strategic partnership with Iran, which has deepened in recent years through economic cooperation, military coordination, and shared geopolitical interests.

Putin says Mojtaba must lead Iran through ‘severe trials’

In his message, Putin said he was confident the new Supreme Leader would preserve his father’s legacy while guiding Iran through a period of extraordinary challenges.

He expressed belief that Mojtaba would continue the policies and vision established by Ali Khamenei and help maintain national unity during a time of crisis.

Putin said the new leader would carry forward his father’s legacy “with honor” and bring together the Iranian people “in the face of severe trials.”

At the same time, the Russian leader acknowledged that Mojtaba Khamenei’s tenure begins under extremely difficult circumstances. The United States and Israel have continued a large-scale military campaign targeting Iranian facilities and assets since the strikes that reportedly killed the former Supreme Leader.

The conflict has rapidly expanded, raising fears of a broader regional confrontation.

Iran launches retaliatory strikes across the region

In response to the airstrikes, Iran has launched multiple waves of drone and missile attacks targeting Israel as well as Gulf states that host US military installations.

Officials say the strikes were aimed at deterring further military action and demonstrating Iran’s ability to retaliate against Western military assets in the region.

The escalation has heightened concerns among regional governments and international observers that the conflict could evolve into a wider war involving multiple Middle Eastern states.

Reports claim Russia is sharing intelligence with Tehran

Amid the escalating crisis, reports indicate that Russia may be actively assisting Iran by sharing intelligence related to US military operations in the region.

According to a report by The Washington Post, Moscow has provided Tehran with real-time information on US warships, aircraft, and other military assets operating in the Middle East since the conflict intensified.

The report cited three officials familiar with the matter, who confirmed the intelligence sharing on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the information.

If confirmed, such cooperation would represent a significant step in Russia’s support for Iran during the ongoing confrontation with the United States and Israel.

China supports the appointment and urges respect for Iran’s sovereignty

Meanwhile, China has also backed Mojtaba Khamenei’s appointment, describing the transition as consistent with Iran’s constitutional framework.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that the decision was an internal matter for Iran and should be respected by the international community.

“China opposes interference in other countries’ internal affairs under any pretext, and Iran’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity should be respected,” he said.

Beijing’s comments signal diplomatic support for Tehran at a time when global attention is focused on the unfolding conflict and its potential geopolitical consequences.

A volatile moment for the Middle East

The appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei marks a significant moment in Iran’s political history, occurring amid military confrontation and rising global tensions.

With Russia and China voicing support for Tehran and the United States and Israel continuing military operations, analysts warn that the situation remains highly volatile. The coming weeks are expected to test the leadership of Iran’s new Supreme Leader as the country navigates one of the most challenging periods in its modern history.
