A local election in Peru has drawn international attention after a candidate named Hitler Mussolini Simeón Flores emerged as the virtual winner of a mayoral race in the country’s Huánuco region. Flores, who ran for the center-left Ahora Nación party, secured 229 votes, or 34.54% of the valid ballots, in Queropalca, according to Peruvian media reports.
The result has attracted attention because Flores’ first and middle names evoke two of the 20th century’s most notorious dictators: Adolf Hitler, the Nazi leader of Germany, and Benito Mussolini, the fascist dictator of Italy. However, his name alone offers no evidence of any political allegiance to either historical figure.
The election itself was closely contested. Flores finished ahead of his nearest rival by just 25 votes, while the gap between the top three candidates was only 42 votes. The outcome has turned a small district’s municipal election into an international talking point, even as the official significance of the result remains rooted in local government.
Who Is Hitler Mussolini Simeón Flores?
Flores contested the mayoral election in Queropalca, a district in Lauricocha province in Peru’s Huánuco department. He represented Ahora Nación, a political party that identifies with social democracy, the democratic left and nationalism.
Peruvian media reports identified Flores as the virtual winner after he received 229 votes, representing 34.54% of valid ballots. His closest rival, Gaspar Benilde Osorio Zambrano of Renovación Popular Perú, received 204 votes, or approximately 30.77%. A third candidate, Itala Yovana Santillan Vara of País para Todos, secured 187 votes, or approximately 28.21%.
The figures show how competitive the contest was. Flores won with just over one-third of the valid vote, rather than an outright majority, while the second- and third-place candidates also attracted substantial support.
His unusual name has brought the election global attention, but the available reporting does not establish that voters chose him because of it. Nor does it establish a connection between his personal views and the dictators whose names he shares.
Why Has the Candidate’s Name Drawn Global Attention?
The names Hitler and Mussolini carry powerful historical associations. Adolf Hitler led Nazi Germany from 1933 until 1945, overseeing the Holocaust and a regime responsible for mass persecution, aggressive war and the deaths of millions. Benito Mussolini ruled fascist Italy from 1922 until 1943 and helped establish fascism as a major political force in 20th-century Europe.
Their names remain closely associated with authoritarian rule, political repression and some of the darkest chapters of modern history. Their appearance together in the name of a contemporary electoral candidate has therefore attracted attention well beyond Peru.
However, a person’s name does not establish their ideology, beliefs or political intentions. There is limited independently verified public information explaining why Flores was given these names, and it would be misleading to infer support for Nazism or fascism from the names alone.
Flores’ political affiliation provides a separate point of context: Ahora Nación describes its principles in terms of social justice, democratic government, equality and regional development. Its stated ideology differs substantially from the historical movements associated with Hitler and Mussolini.
What Is Ahora Nación’s Political Ideology?
Ahora Nación identifies itself as a center-left, social democratic and nationalist political organisation. Its published principles emphasise democratic institutions, decentralization, equal rights and improvements to public services.
The party’s stated priorities include:
- Regional development: Giving Peru’s regions greater influence over their own development and governance.
- Social justice: Promoting equality and access to public services.
- Education and health care: Improving public education and access to health services.
- Democratic institutions: Supporting a democratic state, transparency and accountability.
- Anti-corruption measures: Promoting integrity in public administration and opposing corruption.
These positions help explain why Flores’ party affiliation has become part of the story. The historical associations of his name might lead readers to assume a political connection that the available evidence does not support.
It is important, however, to distinguish a party’s published ideology from the personal beliefs of an individual candidate. The party’s platform provides context, but it does not independently establish Flores’ views on every political issue.
The contrast between the name and the party’s stated principles is striking. Yet the more meaningful measure of Flores’ political outlook will be his own public statements, policy proposals and conduct in office, rather than the names recorded on his identification documents.
Peru Has Elected Another Politician Named Hitler
Flores is not the first Peruvian politician to attract international attention because of a name associated with a notorious historical figure. In 2018, Hitler Guesclin Alba Sánchez won the mayoral election in Yúngar, another Andean district in Peru.
Alba secured 47.7% of the vote and returned to a position he had previously held. During the campaign, he described himself as the “good Hitler” and said his father had chosen the name without fully understanding its historical associations. He also said he rejected the Nazi dictator’s ideology.
The 2018 contest attracted additional attention because one of Alba’s opponents was named Lenin Vladimir Rodríguez Valverde. Rodríguez attempted to challenge Alba’s candidacy, creating an unusual political story involving names associated with two opposing strands of 20th-century political history.
A similar case emerged in Namibia in 2020, when Adolf Hitler Uunona won a local council election. Uunona told the BBC that his father had named him after Hitler but probably did not understand the historical implications. He said he had recognized the significance of the name as he grew older and had no connection to Nazi ideology.
These cases illustrate why unusual names can attract worldwide attention even when the individuals involved have no demonstrated ideological connection to their historical namesakes.
What Happens Next in Queropalca?
For Queropalca’s residents, the more consequential issue is what Flores will do in office. A mayor’s responsibilities concern local administration and development, making public services, infrastructure, municipal spending and accountability more relevant to residents’ daily lives than the international headlines surrounding a candidate’s name.
Flores’ reported victory also came without a majority of valid votes. His 229 votes accounted for 34.54% of the total, while his two closest competitors collectively received considerably more votes. The result underscores the competitive nature of the local election, although the vote totals alone do not establish what motivated individual voters.
The next steps are to confirm the final electoral proclamation and examine Flores’ published government plan and public statements. Peru’s electoral authorities and the country’s official candidate-information platform are the appropriate sources for verifying the result and assessing his stated policy priorities.
For now, the election is a reminder that a headline-grabbing name can draw attention to a local contest, but it cannot substitute for examining a candidate’s record, platform and responsibilities as an elected official.
