On Thursday, The Central American nation broke its long tenure of diplomatic ties with Taiwan. The nation is now switching its allegiance to the mainland, recognizing the Communist Party of China’s (CPC) “One China policy”. According to the policy, there is only one ‘China’-People’s Republic of China (PRC) or the mainland. And, as per CPC, the self-ruled democracy of Taiwan is a part of it. As of now, only 14 nations have official ties with Taiwan, against Chuan’s ever-expanding diplomatic and economic haul.

“There is but one China in the world and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China,” stated the Chinese foreign ministry. “Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. However, Taiwan was quick in responding and expressing its “pain and regret” at Nicaragua’s decision. Additionally, according to a Reuters’ report from Taipei, Daniel Ortega, the Prime Minister of Nicaragua had disintegrated the friendship between the people of the two nations.

“The Government of the Republic of Nicaragua declares that it recognizes that in the world there is only one single China,” stated Nicaragua’s foreign ministry. “The People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government that represents all of China and Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory,” added the official statement. One day after the Nicaraguan foreign ministers delivered the news, delegations from China and Nicaragua held talks in Tianjin, China. “This is the right choice that is in line with the global trend and has people’s support. China highly appreciates this decision,” stated the Central American nation.

China also welcomed the decision, adding that the two countries will be signing a Joint Communiqué on December 10. The Joint Communiqué is on resuming diplomatic relations between the Republic of Nicaragua and the People’s Republic of China. “The two governments have decided to recognize each other and resume diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level, effective from the date of signature of this communiqué,” stated China’s foreign ministry.
