As flames engulfed Altadena during the Eaton Fire, a frightened dog named Max sought solace in an unlikely hero—a firefighter battling the blaze. In a touching moment captured on video, the firefighter was seen comforting Max with one hand while using a hose to fight the fire with the other.
Despite his efforts, the firefighter was forced to move on to the next house, leaving Max alone amidst the chaos. But this was not the end of Max’s story.
A community steps in to save Max
A photographer documenting the scene found Max wandering near the fire site. Determined to help, the photographer contacted Christopher, a local dog trainer and animal advocate who operates a training center in Altadena.
Christopher shared how he quickly sprang into action. “I couldn’t just leave Max there. He was scared and disoriented, but I knew I could help.” In a now-viral video, Christopher is seen calming Max and safely transporting him to his center, where he provides food, water, and care.
Soon after, Christopher located Max’s family and informed them of his rescue. “Max is safe and in good hands,” he reassured them. “You can come and pick him up anytime.”
Viral video sparks a movement
The video of Christopher rescuing Max touched hearts worldwide, leading to an outpouring of support. Donations poured in far beyond what was needed to care for Max. Instead of keeping the excess funds, Christopher pledged to use them to assist other pets affected by the wildfires in Altadena.
“This isn’t just about Max,” Christopher told ABC World News Tonight. “There are so many pets out there who are lost, injured, or displaced because of these fires. Every donation will go toward helping them reunite with their families or find safe shelter.”
