Resurfaced 2020 Post Sparks Outrage in Italian American Community
New York City, NY — Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani is facing intense backlash after a 2020 social media post showing him flipping off a statue of Christopher Columbus in Astoria resurfaced online. The post, shared while Mamdani was running for state office, included the caption: “Take it down,” referring to the controversial monument.
The image has reignited long-standing cultural tensions surrounding Columbus statues and Columbus Day, especially within New York’s Italian American community.
Italian American Leaders Condemn Mamdani
Angelo Vivolo, president of the Columbus Heritage Coalition, expressed outrage over Mamdani’s gesture, calling it disrespectful and vowing to oppose his candidacy.
“If you offend one community, you offend all communities,” Vivolo said in a statement to the New York Post. “I don’t think he will be mayor for all the people of New York City.”
Joseph Scelsa, founder and president of the Italian American Museum, defended Columbus as a symbol of pride for Italian Americans.
“Who’s to say who is a hero and who is not a hero? Columbus is our hero,” Scelsa remarked, noting that Italian Americans make up about 8% of NYC’s population.
Historical Context and Political Fallout
Columbus monuments and the holiday have long been flashpoints in American cultural and political debates. Critics of Columbus cite his treatment of Indigenous peoples, while defenders view him as an enduring symbol of Italian American heritage.
Mamdani, a progressive lawmaker and son of filmmaker Mira Nair, has aligned with left-wing causes and is known for his outspoken views on social justice and historical accountability.
Political Stakes: A Tight Mayoral Race Ahead
Mamdani recently stunned political observers by defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary for mayor. Cuomo, however, is reportedly weighing an Independent run in the November general election.
Other key contenders include:
- Eric Adams (incumbent Mayor, Democrat)
- Curtis Sliwa (Republican nominee, Guardian Angels founder)
If Cuomo re-enters the race, Mamdani could face an uphill battle in a three-way split, especially with growing criticism from ethnic voter blocs and moderate Democrats.
