Trump orders treasury to halt minting new pennies, calls coins 'wasteful'

In a significant shift for U.S. currency policy, President Donald Trump has directed the Treasury Department to cease production of new pennies, pointing to manufacturing costs that exceed the coin’s face value.

“For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents. This is so wasteful! I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies,” Trump declared on his Truth Social platform following his attendance at the Super Bowl in New Orleans.

The announcement aligns with the administration’s broader cost-cutting initiatives, including agency restructuring and federal workforce reductions. In a follow-up message, Trump emphasized his commitment to fiscal responsibility, stating, “Let’s rip the waste out of our great nation’s budget, even if it’s a penny at a time.”

DOGE investigation raises questions

The penny proclamation comes amid broader scrutiny of Treasury operations. During his journey to the Super Bowl, Trump revealed that Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had uncovered potential irregularities in Treasury Department data.

“There could be a problem, you’ve been reading about that, with Treasuries,” Trump told reporters, though the scope of these concerns remained unclear. A Bloomberg report noted ambiguity about whether these comments referenced U.S. government debt or departmental payment processing.

The investigation has faced immediate legal hurdles. A federal court has temporarily restricted DOGE’s access to Treasury Department information, mandating the destruction of previously collected data following litigation from multiple states.

Financial implications

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has identified the 10-year government debt yield as a crucial metric in Trump’s strategy to reduce interest rates. Meanwhile, administration officials maintain that DOGE’s review of Treasury payment systems will contribute to future deficit reduction.

The move to halt penny production represents one of the most visible manifestations of Trump’s fiscal reform agenda, targeting a coin that has been in continuous production since 1793. Critics and supporters alike are closely watching how this decision might impact both daily commerce and broader economic policy.
