“I Don’t Think We Should Have Billionaires”: Zohran Mamdani’s Comment Sparks NYC Political Firestorm

Zohran Mamdani, NYC’s Democratic Socialist mayoral nominee, says billionaires shouldn’t exist. Now, Wall Street is panicking, Trump is threatening funding cuts, and the political stakes just exploded.

What Did Zohran Mamdani Say?

Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist and the presumptive Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, ignited a national debate on Sunday by saying billionaires should not exist.

“I don’t think that we should have billionaires,” Mamdani said during an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press. “It is so much money in a moment of such inequality… what we need more of is equality across our city, our state, and our country.”

The comment wasn’t offhand—it reflects a broader agenda. Mamdani has proposed steep tax increases on New York’s top 1%, including:

  • Raising the corporate tax rate from 7.25% to 11.5%.
  • A 2% income surcharge on those earning over $1 million.
  • Closing tax loopholes used by hedge funds and real estate firms.

His stated goal? To use that revenue to fund affordable housing, universal child care, and expanded public transit.

“I want to increase these taxes… to increase quality of life for everyone—including those who are going to be taxed,” he added.

Why Is Wall Street Up in Arms?

Mamdani’s comments hit a nerve in a city that is home to more billionaires than anywhere else on Earth. Many of them aren’t taking it lightly.

Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, a frequent political donor and outspoken Trump supporter, issued a public call to action. In a post on X, Ackman warned that Mamdani’s policies would be “disastrous for NYC” and promised to “bankroll a competitor.”

“Socialism has no place in the economic capital of our country,” Ackman wrote. “There are hundreds of millions of dollars of capital available… believe me, I am in the WhatsApp groups.”

Ackman is reportedly mobilizing a network of wealthy donors who can instantly fund an alternative candidate, ensuring they won’t need to waste time raising money.

The Financial Times reported similar concerns from Wall Street insiders, who warned that Mamdani’s tax proposals could lead to a “capital flight” from the city. Real estate mogul John Catsimatidis called Mamdani’s agenda “naïve at best, dangerous at worst.”

How Is the Federal Government Responding?

Former President Donald Trump also weighed in. In an interview with Fox News taped Friday, Trump threatened to cut off federal funding to New York City if Mamdani wins and refuses to “do the right thing.”

“If he does get in, I’m going to be president,” Trump told Maria Bartiromo. “And he’s going to have to do the right thing or they’re not getting any money.”

Trump also labeled Mamdani a “communist,” a claim the candidate directly refuted.

“I am not a communist,” Mamdani said on NBC. “What I am is someone who wants to serve the working people of this city—the same people Trump claimed to care about but abandoned.”

Mamdani has faced a torrent of personal attacks about his ethnicity, background, and ideology. He’s brushed those aside, saying the focus should be on inequality in a city where 1 in 4 residents live in poverty.

Who’s Stepping In to Fight—or Support?

While Ackman leads the charge against Mamdani, the candidate isn’t without allies. Several progressive voices, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders, have praised his platform.

They argue that Mamdani represents a growing populist movement in New York politics, one that rejects trickle-down economics and aims to address the city’s deep structural inequities.

The battle lines are forming quickly. On one side: wealthy donors and corporate interests. On the other, a candidate fueled by grassroots support, running on a vision of redistribution and systemic reform.

Ackman’s suggested alternative candidates haven’t yet emerged publicly, but insiders say names are circulating.

What Could Happen Next?

The political implications are significant:

  • Mamdani’s policies, if implemented, could reshape NYC’s fiscal structure—and its national image.
  • A donor-backed challenger could split the Democratic vote or galvanize moderate voters.
  • A Trump-Mamdani clash could turn the mayoral race into a national culture war symbol.

Mamdani’s platform is likely to remain under the microscope. Critics say his ideas could drive out top earners, gut the city’s tax base, and make New York less competitive. Supporters believe bold action is overdue in a city of glaring contradictions, where luxury condos rise next to overburdened shelters.

TL;DR

  • Zohran Mamdani, NYC’s presumptive Democratic mayoral nominee, said billionaires shouldn’t exist, sparking outrage.
  • Hedge fund titan Bill Ackman vowed to fund a challenger; Trump threatened to withhold federal funds.
  • Mamdani calls himself a Democratic Socialist and wants to raise taxes on the wealthy to fund public services.
  • A political showdown is brewing, with NYC as the battleground for inequality, ideology, and power.
