New York firm proposes space-based skyscraper in groundbreaking design

In an audacious proposal that blurs the line between science fiction and architectural innovation, New York-based firm Clouds Architecture Office has unveiled its concept for the Analemma Tower—a building that would hang from the sky, tethered to an asteroid placed in geosynchronous orbit above Earth.

Suspended by ultra-strong cables, the tower would dangle upside down from the asteroid, orbiting the planet in a figure-eight pattern. This orbital path would offer dynamic, ever-shifting views of Earth’s surface, potentially revolutionizing the way we conceive of location-based architecture.

Skyscraper design flips gravity on its head

“Analemma Tower inverts the traditional diagram of an earth-based foundation, instead depending on a space-based supporting foundation from which the tower is suspended,” the firm explains on its official website. The proposed design relies on what Clouds Architecture Office calls the Universal Orbital Support System (UOSS), an evolution of space elevator principles adapted for a mobile, orbiting structure.

By installing a large asteroid in Earth’s orbit, engineers could lower a high-strength cable toward the planet’s surface and suspend the massive tower from it. As the asteroid loops in geosynchronous orbit, the tower would trace a figure-eight ground path—slowing down at the top and bottom of the loop, where the building could potentially interface with the Earth’s surface.

A new kind of mobility—and Dubai as a launchpad

Because it wouldn’t require a ground foundation, Analemma Tower could be constructed anywhere and relocated to its final orbital position. The proposal suggests building the tower over Dubai—a city already renowned for pushing the limits of vertical construction and where the cost of building supertall structures is estimated at one-fifth of that in New York City.

“Since this new tower typology is suspended in the air, it can be constructed anywhere in the world and transported to its final location,” the firm notes.

Space-powered infrastructure and futuristic technology

The tower’s energy needs would be met through solar panels installed above Earth’s atmosphere, where they would benefit from uninterrupted sunlight exposure and higher energy efficiency compared to traditional photovoltaic systems on the ground.

Water would be collected from rain and clouds and purified in a semi-closed loop, while electromagnetic, cable-less elevators—now advancing rapidly in real-world development—would overcome the height restrictions that previously limited vertical construction.

A bold vision for architecture beyond Earth

While the concept remains theoretical, the Analemma Tower represents a provocative leap forward in architectural thinking, leveraging aerospace technology to explore new spatial frontiers.

“By placing a large asteroid into orbit over Earth, a high-strength cable can be lowered towards the surface of Earth, from which a super tall tower can be suspended,” the firm states. The design doesn’t just aim high—it redefines high.

The proposed trajectory of the tower allows it to travel between the northern and southern hemispheres each day. Notably, the slowest part of its orbit would occur over New York City, creating the potential for extended interaction between the building and Earth’s surface during these moments.

If realized, Analemma Tower would stand as both an architectural and technological marvel, suspended between Earth and space, redefining humanity’s relationship with gravity, construction, and location.
