Ex-Astronomer HR Executive Blames Coldplay Kiss Cam Scandal on “Bad Decision” After Drinks

Months after a brief moment on a stadium screen upended her career, a former senior HR executive at tech firm Astronomer has publicly addressed the viral Coldplay concert scandal that turned her into an internet punchline—and, she says, left her effectively unemployable.

Kristin Cabot, Astronomer’s former chief people officer, says the now-infamous kiss-cam incident involving her married boss was the result of a “bad decision” fueled by “a couple of High Noons.” In multiple interviews published Thursday, Cabot described how a 16-second clip from a packed stadium spiraled into what she calls a life-altering fallout.

What Happened at the Coldplay Concert?

The incident dates back to a Coldplay concert attended by tens of thousands of fans, where the band’s kiss cam panned to Cabot and then-Astronomer CEO Andy Byron.

A scandal that went viral

  • Cabot and Byron were shown dancing closely on the Jumbotron.
  • Realizing they were on screen, the pair appeared to scramble to avoid the camera.
  • The footage spread rapidly online, spawning memes and tabloid headlines within hours.

What might have been a fleeting, awkward scandal for concertgoers quickly became a viral scandal, amplified by the fact that Cabot was the company’s top HR executive and Byron was both her boss and publicly married at the time.

Cabot Breaks Her Silence

In her first extended comments since the incident, Cabot acknowledged her role in what happened.

“I made a bad decision and had a couple of High Noons and danced and acted inappropriately with my boss,” she told The New York Times, adding that Byron had been her “big happy crush.”

She said she understood the professional consequences, even if she believes the public reaction went too far.

“And it’s not nothing,” she said. “I took accountability, and I gave up my career for that. That’s the price I chose to pay.”

Were They Having an Affair?

Cabot pushed back against some of the assumptions that took hold online.

Key clarifications she offered

  • Both she and Byron were amicably separated from their spouses at the time.
  • The concert was not a company event.
  • They attended with friends, not coworkers or investors.

Still, she conceded that the optics were damaging—particularly given her role overseeing workplace ethics and conduct.

“Boston’s not a big town,” she said. “There could have been investors or other staff there. And then it hits me: ‘Oh God, Andy’s my effing boss.’”

Why the Backlash Was So Severe

Cabot says the reaction went far beyond criticism of her judgment.

She described becoming a “meme” overnight and said the incident erased decades of professional accomplishments.

“It has been like a scarlet letter,” she told The Times of London. “People erased everything I’d accomplished in my life and achieved in my career.”

According to Cabot, recruiters and industry contacts have told her bluntly that she is now “unemployable.”

Gender and Power: An Uneven Reckoning?

One of Cabot’s strongest claims is that she bore the brunt of public outrage.

Her argument

  • She was labeled a “gold-digger” and accused of sleeping her way to the top.
  • She believes the criticism focused more intensely on her than on Byron.
  • The narrative ignored the professional sacrifices she made over decades.

“I think as a woman, as women always do, I took the bulk of the abuse,” she said, describing years spent deflecting unwanted comments and advances in male-dominated workplaces.

This aspect of the controversy has reignited debate around how scandals involving workplace relationships are framed—and who ultimately pays the higher reputational cost.

The Personal Fallout

Beyond her career, Cabot said the incident destabilized her personal life.

She acknowledged knowing her soon-to-be ex-husband was somewhere in the Coldplay crowd when the kiss cam aired—a realization that hit her almost immediately when she saw herself on screen.

“My first thought was, ‘Holy s—, Andrew’s here,’” she said, stressing that their separation had been amicable and that she feared embarrassing him.

Cabot filed for divorce roughly a month after the video went viral.

What Happened to Andy Byron?

Cabot said she and Byron briefly stayed in touch after the incident to exchange what she described as “crisis-management advice.” They have not spoken in months.

Astronomer has not publicly detailed the circumstances surrounding Byron’s exit beyond confirming leadership changes at the company. Neither Byron nor the Astronomer commented on Cabot’s latest interviews.

Why This Story Resonates

At its core, this saga taps into larger questions:

  • How much should private behavior matter in professional settings?
  • Do viral moments permanently redefine a person’s identity?
  • Can accountability coexist with proportional consequences?

Cabot insists she is not seeking sympathy—only perspective.

“I could have been struck by lightning, I could have won the lottery, or this could have happened,” she said. “This can’t be the final word.”

TL;DR

  • Former Astronomer HR Executive Kristin Cabot says a Coldplay kiss cam scandal ruined her career.
  • She blames a “bad decision” after a few drinks and acknowledges poor judgment.
  • Cabot says the backlash was disproportionate and gendered.
  • She claims the incident has made her unemployable despite decades of experience.
  • The story has reignited debate over workplace power dynamics and viral shaming.
