Wrestling icon Hulk Hogan’s controversial sex tape scandal is back in the spotlight following his reported death at age 71. The WWE Hall of Famer, whose real name was Terry Gene Bollea, passed away after suffering cardiac arrest, according to early reports. Among the most infamous chapters of his life was a legal battle that began in the bedroom and ended in a landmark courtroom victory against media outlet Gawker.
A Betrayal Caught on Tape
The controversy began in 2006 when Hogan had sex with Heather Clem, the wife of his then-friend and radio personality Todd Clem, also known as “Bubba the Love Sponge.” Although the act was consensual, it was secretly recorded without Hogan’s knowledge. The clip later surfaced online, igniting one of the most high-profile privacy lawsuits in recent history.
According to Hogan, the encounter was initiated by the Clems themselves. In an interview on The Howard Stern Show, he said Heather “kept going down that road,” ultimately leading to the encounter. The couple reportedly stopped by Hogan’s house, and Heather “tempted him again,” prompting him to give in amid emotional vulnerability following his divorce.
Gawker Publishes the Clip and Pays the Price
In October 2012, a two-minute snippet of the sex tape, including 10 seconds of explicit content, was published by Gawker. Hogan was “completely humiliated” and swiftly filed lawsuits against both the Clems and the publication. Bubba settled within two weeks.
But the fight with Gawker was just beginning.
In a blockbuster trial, Hogan was awarded over $140 million in damages in March 2016. Gawker’s editor A.J. Daulerio claimed that by recording the tape, Hogan had made his private life a public matter. But Hogan’s attorneys argued there was no news value in broadcasting such an intimate moment.
The court sided with Hogan, ruling that the video constituted an invasion of privacy. The next day, Gawker declared bankruptcy and shut down permanently. The lawsuit became a landmark case in celebrity privacy law, affirming that even public figures have boundaries.
Bubba the Love Sponge: “Those Issues Were Mostly My Fault”
After Hogan’s death, Bubba expressed remorse over the years-long feud. Speaking to TMZ, he said:
“I’m heartbroken to hear of Terry’s passing. As everyone knows, we had our issues, and those issues were mostly my fault. I loved him as a friend while he was with us and will continue to love his memory as a friend going forward.”
Just a week prior, Bubba had claimed Hogan was on his “death bed,” suggesting that the wrestler was in critical condition and that his family had been called to say their goodbyes.
“If you did some sniffing around, you might find him in a hospital near you, and it’s not good,” he said at the time.
However, Hogan’s longtime friend and manager, Jimmy Hart, denied those claims, leading to confusion about the wrestler’s condition in his final days.
