iPhone Duo Is $1,999 and Ships in January. Should You Wait?

The iPhone Duo goes on sale today at $1,999. Order one online now, though, and Apple’s US store says it ships January 22. That’s $800 more than an iPhone 18 Pro, for a phone reviewers like but still call a first-generation product.

For most buyers the real choice isn’t whether to buy a Duo today. It’s whether to join a three-month queue, buy a rival that arrives next week, or let the first owners find the problems.

What Apple is selling, and what the extra $800 buys

Apple’s September 9 press release lays out the basics. The Duo opens from a 5.4-inch outer screen into a 7.6-inch inner one. Apple says the inner display is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s. The phone runs the same A20 Pro chip as the 18 Pro and has a titanium frame.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, according to Apple’s US store. So the $800 premium mostly buys the folding screen, the hinge and the software built around them.

It doesn’t buy a better camera. The Duo has a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultra wide, but no dedicated telephoto lens. The Verge’s review says the main sensor is smaller than the 18 Pro’s and “a notch below flagship tier.” The Duo also swaps Face ID for Touch ID in the side button, and it is eSIM-only worldwide.

It is heavier, too. Apple’s spec sheet lists 254 grams. Wired’s reviewer, who otherwise rated it highly, said Apple may tackle “the weight problem” in the next version.

The price table, and the wait you’ll actually face

We checked Apple’s US online store at about 11 a.m. ET on October 23. Every configuration in both colors showed the same message: “Ships Jan 22,” with standard delivery within five days after that. Store pickup at Apple’s New York, San Francisco and Chicago locations showed “Check back for availability on 10.24.”

We pulled rival prices from Samsung’s and Google’s US stores at the same time.

iPhone Duo $1,999 $2,199 $2,599 $3,199 Ships Jan 22
Galaxy Z Fold8 $1,899.99 ($1,699.99 on sale) $2,099.99 ($1,899.99) $2,499.99 ($2,299.99) Not listed By Oct 27 to Oct 30

iPhone 18 Pro (not a foldable) $1,199

Two things stand out. At list price the Duo costs just $100 more than Samsung’s Fold8, a point Tom’s Guide made in its review. But Samsung is selling the Fold8 for $200 off right now. That makes the real gap $300, and the Samsung phone arrives three months sooner.

The January date matches what Bloomberg reported on October 16. Ship dates slid into January minutes after preorders opened, and stores ran out of launch-day stock, The Next Web summarized.

Apple told some store staff to discourage launch-day walk-ins, MacRumors reported. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman called the decision to open preorders despite “severe supply constraints” a “major mistake,” according to MacRumors. Apple hasn’t said how many units it built.

The crease, the hinge and a $999 screen repair

Every foldable has a crease where the screen bends. Apple’s answer is a matte nano-texture finish that it says minimizes the line. Reviewers mostly agree it works.

The Verge said “you mostly can’t see the display crease, although you can definitely feel it.” Its reviewers saw no change after a week of folding. Wired said it was “hardly visible.”

Durability over years is the open question, and no review can answer it yet. Apple says the hinge has more than 100 components and that layers of glass protect the inner screen.

Repair pricing is where the Duo gets expensive. Apple’s out-of-warranty fee for inner-display damage is $999, according to the price list MacRumors published on October 14. Outer-display damage is $379, and “other damage” tops out at $1,499. A scratched cover layer on the inner screen, which Apple designed to be replaceable, costs $49.

AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for the Duo costs $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year, according to Apple’s AppleCare page. That is $50 a year more than the same plan for an iPhone 18 Pro. With it, an inner-display repair drops to $99 and theft or loss to $149, MacRumors reported.

Our math: two years of AppleCare+ plus one inner-screen repair comes to about $500. A single uncovered inner-screen repair costs $999. If you’re someone who has cracked a phone screen before, the plan pays for itself on the first break.

What reviewers say about living with it

The early reviews are broadly positive, though full of caveats, Macworld’s roundup found. PCMag called the Duo the best foldable on the market for hardware, performance and battery life. CNET said Apple “stuck the landing,” while stressing that the phone isn’t for everyone.

The complaints cluster in three places. The Verge found the phone “definitely gets warm, and sometimes hot,” especially in video apps and camera modes. It also said the Duo “doesn’t seem ready to last a full day of heavy use.” Wired and CNET, by contrast, reported good battery life.

The third issue is apps. Wired and Tom’s Guide both found popular apps that leave black bars on the inner screen. Developers need to target the iOS 27.1 software kit to fix that, Wired noted, and it will take time.

Who should buy now, and who should wait

If you already wanted a foldable and live in Apple’s ecosystem, the reviews suggest the Duo is a polished first attempt. Ordering now locks in a January spot, and MacRumors notes that Apple often beats its own ship estimates.

Everyone else has good reasons to wait. App support should be better in three months, and Apple says Apple Pencil support is coming “later this year.” Wired’s reviewer suggested waiting a few months for app updates, and said it “may be prudent to wait for the Duo 2.”

If you want a foldable this month, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is $300 cheaper today and arrives next week. If the fold isn’t the point, the iPhone 18 Pro has the same A20 Pro chip, better cameras and an $800 lower price.

Demand for that phone has been softer, with reports of 18 Pro production cuts earlier this month. Travelers can check where the iPhone 18 Pro and Duo sell cheapest. Just confirm your carrier supports eSIM first.

The next date to watch is October 30, when the Duo goes on sale in 28 more countries and regions, according to Apple. That launch will show whether Apple’s supply is catching up, or whether US ship dates slip further into 2027.
