Silicon Valley eatery powered by ABB Robotics marks bold shift in automated food service

New burger joint delivers speed, precision, and robotic coworkers

In the heart of Silicon Valley, a new burger restaurant is redefining fast food by removing chefs from the kitchen altogether. Operated by high-speed robots, the California-based BurgerBots restaurant claims it can assemble and serve freshly made burgers in just 27 seconds.

Built by ABB Robotics, the restaurant’s automated kitchen deploys two industrial robots in harmony to deliver what its creators describe as a faster, more efficient, and transparent dining experience.

High-speed burger assembly powered by ABB’s automation

At the core of BurgerBots‘ operation are two distinct robotic units — the Flexpicker and YuMi, which work in sync to handle the full burger-building process.

A freshly seared patty is placed onto a bun and moved along a conveyor belt marked with a QR code. The Flexpicker reads this code to identify the specific order, then rapidly selects toppings like lettuce, cheese, onions, pickles, and house sauce.

YuMi, the second robot, executes the final assembly steps with surgical precision, delivering a complete meal to the handoff point in under half a minute.

“Consistency, transparency, efficiency”: the founder’s vision

Elizabeth Truong, founder of BurgerBots, says the motivation behind the concept is rooted in bringing predictability and insight to an industry traditionally plagued by variable costs and labor inefficiencies.

“The vision was to bring consistency, transparency, and efficiency to food service. For restaurant owners, it means better visibility of food costs, more accurate forecasting, and—ultimately—better decision-making,” Truong said.

The initiative, while high-tech, still preserves a human touch. Though robots craft the meals, it’s human servers who present them to diners — a key choice that hints at the evolving nature of human-robot collaboration.

Automation won’t eliminate jobs, but it will change them

While the rise of robotics in restaurants raises concerns over job displacement, industry leaders argue that the shift is more about transformation than elimination.

According to a 2025 World Economic Forum report, automation and AI could displace as many as 92 million jobs by 2030, with roles in fast food and cashier services among the most vulnerable.

Still, ABB Robotics president Marc Segura emphasizes that hospitality professionals appear ready for the change.

“When we asked the hospitality industry, 89% of managers and 73% of workers said they are open to the integration of robotics to automate tasks within their operations,” Segura noted.

A glimpse into the restaurant of the future

Truong believes the future of food service will increasingly feature robotic assistance — not as a gimmick, but as a practical necessity.

“In the next five years, I believe that most restaurants will have some form of robotic automation, whether it’s back-of-house preparation, assembly, or even front-of-house service. It will become less of a novelty and more of a necessity,” she said.

With Silicon Valley already embracing this robotic revolution, BurgerBots could be the first of many kitchens where AI and automation are not just tools, but coworkers.
