“It’s Unbearable”: Gisèle Pélicot Breaks Silence on Years of Alleged Abuse

In a harrowing testimony delivered at a court in Avignon, southern France, Gisèle Pélicot, a woman who was allegedly drugged by her now ex-husband to be raped while unconscious by other men, recounted the devastating impact of the years of alleged abuse. Her ex-husband, Dominique Pélicot, and 50 other men are currently standing trial on charges of rape, facing up to 20 years in prison.

A shocking discovery

Speaking in a composed yet emotionally charged manner, Gisèle described how her life was irrevocably shattered when police uncovered the systematic abuse. She revealed that her former spouse had meticulously filmed the suspected rapes, amassing thousands of incriminating images later found by police investigators.

“It’s unbearable,” Gisèle testified. “I have so much to say that I don’t always know where to start.”

The Associated Press typically does not identify victims of sexual crimes, but Gisèle’s lawyer, Stéphane Babonneau, stated that she chose to have her name published and insisted that the trial be held publicly. She expressed hope that her testimony might help prevent other women from enduring similar ordeals.

“I thought we were a close couple,” she told the court, recounting the life they shared in a small town in Provence with their three children before the revelations of late 2020.

Unveiling the horror

The nightmare began to unravel when a security agent caught Dominique Pélicot photographing women’s crotches in a supermarket. This led investigators to search his phone and computer, where they found thousands of photographs and videos depicting men allegedly raping Gisèle while she appeared to be unconscious.

Shocked and devastated, she left her husband after police showed her some of the images. “For me, everything collapses,” she said. “These are scenes of barbarity, of rape.”

Leaving with just two suitcases, Gisèle lamented, “all that was left for me of 50 years of life together.” She tearfully admitted, “I no longer have an identity. … I don’t know if I’ll ever rebuild myself.”

Systematic exploitation

Investigators discovered communications in which Dominique Pélicot allegedly invited men to sexually abuse his wife via a messaging website commonly used by criminals. The website has since been shut down.

The trial has revealed crude details of the alleged abuses, which reportedly began in 2011, and the elaborate system Pélicot allegedly put in place over a decade. Men invited to the couple’s home had to adhere to strict rules: they could not talk loudly, had to undress in the kitchen, and refrain from wearing perfume or smelling of tobacco.

Some men had to wait up to an hour and a half in a nearby parking lot for the drug to take full effect and render Gisèle unconscious.

“I was sacrificed on the altar of vice,” she testified. “They regarded me like a rag doll, like a garbage bag.”

Prosecution and trial

Due to Dominique Pélicot’s videotaping of the alleged rapes, police were able to track down a majority of the 72 suspects over two years. Alongside Pélicot, 50 other men, aged 22 to 70, are facing trial. Several defendants are denying some of the accusations, claiming they were manipulated by Pélicot.

Over the coming months, the defendants will appear in small groups before a panel of five judges. Dominique Pélicot is scheduled to testify next week, and the court will also hear from psychologists, psychiatrists, and computer experts.

Seeking justice

Gisèle’s courageous testimony sheds light on an unimaginable betrayal and seeks to bring justice to those responsible. Her story underscores the importance of recognizing and addressing the hidden suffering of victims of sexual crimes, in hopes of preventing such horrors in the future.
