Google Layoffs: Google employees in Switzerland stage walkout over mass layoffs

Following the company’s recent round of major layoffs, employees at the Google office in Switzerland staged a walkout. In Google’s 2023 layoffs, 12,000 employees lost their jobs. The Alphabet Inc. corporation has previously announced that it will be reducing its global headcount by 6%.

There are about 250 staff at the Zurich headquarters

There is about 250 staff at the Zurich headquarters, according to a Bloomberg report. Before their lunch break, they got up from their workstations with help from the labor union Syndicom. The employees gathered outside the Google office holding placards.

According to Dominik Fitze, a union representative, the workers asked the tech giant to communicate with the committee. To discuss job choices and support for foreign nationals employed by the company in accordance with Swiss Law, the employees requested a dialogue. Fitze continued by saying that the workers also wanted a guarantee from Google that there wouldn’t be any additional layoffs.

Google fired about 12,000 workers in January

At present. In Zurich, the tech giant employs about 5000 people. These workers weren’t the only ones, though, to express their rage about the layoffs. Similar demonstrations were also organized by Google employees from California and New York in the US.

Google revealed in January 2023 that it has fired about 12,000 workers and will be cutting jobs globally by 6%. Many former employees used Twitter to communicate their fate after this statement. Many people also mentioned how hurt they were by the unplanned layoffs. Internet users, former workers, and others even called for Google CEO Sundar Pichai to step down from this position. Soon after the Google Layoffs, rumors of a potential compensation reduction for Pichai also started to circulate.
