Gettysburg, PA – Dan Rivera, a 54-year-old paranormal investigator and U.S. Army veteran, died unexpectedly on Sunday night after completing a sold-out stop in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, as part of the “Devils on the Run Tour,” which featured the infamous Annabelle doll.
Rivera, known for his appearances on the Travel Channel’s Most Haunted Places and as a producer on Netflix’s 28 Days Haunted, was found unresponsive in his hotel room just hours after the tour wrapped. Emergency responders were dispatched following a call reporting CPR in progress, but Rivera was pronounced dead at the scene, The Evening Sun reported.
Dan Rivera: Cause of Death Unknown, Investigation Ongoing
The New England Society for Psychic Research (NESPR), where Rivera served as lead investigator, confirmed his death in a statement Monday. “His exact cause of death remains unclear,” the group said. Authorities stated that the incident does not appear suspicious, though an official investigation is underway.
Rivera had been touring the country with the original Annabelle doll—a Raggedy Ann figure linked to decades of supernatural lore and terror. He played a central role in NESPR’s efforts to preserve and promote the legacy of legendary paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
A Legacy in the Paranormal World
Rivera was a prominent figure in the paranormal community, using social media—especially TikTok—to reach younger audiences. His viral content helped reignite interest in haunted artifacts, particularly the Annabelle doll, which has remained a cultural icon through the Conjuring film universe.
As part of NESPR, Rivera had been working closely with Tony Spera, the Warrens’ son-in-law and current steward of their archive. The travelling exhibit featuring Annabelle has become a popular attraction, introducing new generations to the chilling stories behind the Warrens’ investigations.
The Origins of Annabelle
The Annabelle doll was first given to a nursing student in Connecticut named Donna in the 1970s. After reporting bizarre occurrences, a psychic medium claimed the doll was possessed by the spirit of a six-year-old girl. The Warrens, however, concluded it was demonic in nature.
The doll, credited by the Warrens with causing physical harm and accidents, was placed in a locked, blessed container and housed in the now-shuttered Warren Occult Museum in Connecticut. Despite its secure containment, the doll continues to spark conspiracy theories, including false claims linking it to a fire and prison escape earlier this year. Spera has publicly denied these rumors, stating the doll has remained under strict control.
Community Pays Tribute
Fellow paranormal investigator Ryan Buell shared an emotional tribute to Rivera on TikTok, writing, “I have so many amazing memories with this guy. Just as recently as two months ago, we traveled around the country and introduced a whole new generation to Ed and Lorraine Warren’s legacy.”
Rivera is survived by his wife, Sarah, and their four children.
